A?RECENT $26 million announcement by NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner to fund an overhaul of pain management services has been welcomed by Professor Colleen Cartwright, director of Southern Cross University's Aged Services Unit.

"I'm delighted to see this funding. It's excellent that the Minister is talking about an overhaul for pain management in NSW. Indeed, I would encourage all states to follow suit," she said.

Professor Cartwright said the announcement was particularly important for regions such as Tweed Heads.

"The Minister's commitment of $26 million over the next four years to support the development of new pain management services in regional areas is particularly important given that the Tweed has one of the highest percentages of older people in the State," she said.

"Furthermore, the state electorate of Tweed has the highest number of people suffering from dementia in the State, according to a Deloitte Access Economics report. Indeed the North Coast is over-represented in this area with Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and the Clarence in the top 10 electorates in the state and Lismore and Ballina in the top 30.

"It should be noted that older people and those suffering from dementia often don't receive adequate pain relief. So while the funding announcement is excellent, I'm concerned that the focus of this money is on chronic pain services and while that is important, because people living with pain have a totally diminished qualify of life, there is also a need for a specific focus for pain relief at the very end of life.

"My research over the past 22 years continues to demonstrate that that is being poorly done in many places and recent cases brought to my attention demonstrate that."

In a recent account told to Professor Cartwright, a very frail elderly man fractured his hip on a Friday afternoon and was admitted to a NSW hospital. The treating medical practitioner decided he was too frail for surgery. He was clearly in agony and his daughter requested more pain relief and a palliative care consultation. She was told that no palliative care staff were available on the weekend. Nurses came to roll him, to avoid bed sores, without any additional pain medication. On the third occasion the man looked at his daughter with terror in his eyes and said 'Not roll, not roll.' The daughter then had to threaten the nurses with physical violence to ensure they stopped rolling him.

"From my earlier research, the community don't believe that doctors can control pain in terminally ill patients as much as doctors believe they can control the pain," Professor Cartwright said.

"The above case, while extreme, and other cases have made me realise that the situation is getting worse so I'm now considering the best way to do more research in this area and I would be interested to hear from anyone in the community who has had similar experiences."

Greek leaders agree bulk of austerity cuts: source

ATHENS (Reuters) - Political leaders in Greece have agreed on most of the austerity measures demanded by its creditors and are now eyeing pension and wage cuts to find the final 1.5 billion euros of savings still needed, a source close to the talks said on Sunday.

Greece must find savings worth 11.5 billion euros for 2013 and 2014 to satisfy its increasingly impatient lenders who are currently on a visit to Athens to evaluate the country's progress in complying with the terms of its latest bailout.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras's government last week managed to draw up a list of measures to achieve those savings, but the three parties in his conservative-led administration failed to agree on them, and are to due to resume talks on Monday.

"The political leaders don't disagree on anything, there are just alternative proposals being discussed to protect those with low pensions or incomes in the public sector," said the source, who is involved in the talks. "We need measures worth 1.5 billion euros to finalize the 11.5 billion euro package."

Near-bankrupt Greece is fighting an increasingly desperate battle to convince skeptical European Union and International Monetary Fund lenders it has turned over a new leaf and is ready to push through long-delayed reforms to overhaul its recession-hit economy.

But the lenders have so far appeared far from convinced, and officials have told Reuters the country is likely to require a new debt restructuring that the euro zone - faced with market turmoil in Italy and Spain as well - can ill afford.

Greek media have reported that the country's leaders are discussing possible layoffs of contractors in the public sector, a cap on pensions, cuts in welfare benefits, reductions in tax exemptions, and lower salaries for public employees as well as raising the retirement age by a year to make up for the shortfall in savings.

PRESSURE ON CASH RESERVES

With a decision on a new tranche of aid to Greece not expected until September, the country's already dire financial position appears to be getting increasingly precarious.

"The fact that we have not received the agreed aid installments has put pressure on our cash reserves. Until then, we are taking extra care in managing our cash," Deputy Finance Minister Christos Staikouras told Real News weekly.

The so-called troika of EU, European Central Bank and IMF lenders is due to wrap up its visit to Athens in the coming days and return in September to complete its assessment of whether Greece deserves more aid.

A fifth year of recession, record unemployment levels, and repeated waves of austerity cuts have fuelled growing anger towards the troika and the austerity medicine it has insisted on.

Summing up the dark public mood, the GSEE union on Friday lambasted the troika for heaping misery on Greeks, after the two sides held talks.

"We agreed on one thing - that we disagree on everything," Yannis Panagopoulos, the head of the GSEE union, said in a statement. "The troika men came to Greece as doctors and prescribed the medicine that would save the Greek economy and people, but in the end they proved to be charlatans."

Thousands of stroller-pushing Hong Kong parents and activists protest a plan to introduce national education lessons, slamming it as a bid to brainwash children with Chinese propaganda.

Hong Kong: Thousands of Hong Kong parents marched in the streets on Sunday in protest against a school curriculum plan they said was an attempt to brainwash students by extolling the achievements of the Chinese Communist party.
The controversy is the latest backlash against perceived political influence from Beijing in the former British colony that returned to Chinese rule in 1997.
The furor focuses on a Hong Kong government-funded 34-page book titled ?The China Model? celebrating China?s single party Communist state as a unique political system under which its economy and society have flourished.

The book will form the basis of a national education curriculum for students aged six years and older in Hong Kong schools in the coming year.

?We don?t want our child to be fed this material, said P.S. Ho, who joined the protest along with his wife and four-year-old daughter.

?If the initiative continues without changes, maybe we will change schools later or immigrate to another country.?

Parents with children in strollers, secondary school students and activists joined the rally on a sweltering afternoon, carrying placards and handing out pamphlets decrying the education plan.
A police officer estimated the crowd to be about 19,000 which is considered sizeable by Hong Kong standards.

?Parents are concerned. We don?t want them to brainwash our children?s minds,? said Linda Wong, a member of a parent concern group and a mother of one.

While the booklet touches on some negative aspects of contemporary Chinese history including unfair land grabs by corrupt officials and a toxic milk powder scandal, it makes no mention of the June 4 crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing?s Tiananmen Square in 1989.

It also describes the US political system as having ?created social turbulence and is harmful to people?s livelihood.?

?This material is given to elementary school students. They don?t have the independent thinking capabilities to judge for themselves,? said Joseph Wong, 19, a member of a youth activist group.

Hong Kong officials rejected any plan to introduce Chinese-style propaganda, saying the ?China Model? booklet was only a guide.

?We definitely would not want to see any so-called brainwashing type of education from happening. If that indeed happens, which we do not believe will happen?we would be the first one to come out to condemn such a situation,? said Lee Chack-fan, chairman of a group tasked with drafting the guidelines for the national education scheme.

Afghan laws banning lavish weddings proving hard to enact

KABUL (Reuters) - A law curbing the spiraling costs of lavish Afghan weddings is proving difficult to enact, with many lawmakers opposed to legislation meant to contain crippling marriage bills in one of the world's poorest countries, a top government adviser said.

Since U.S.-backed Afghan forces ousted the austere Islamist Taliban in 2001, Afghans have revived the tradition of holding extravagant weddings, costing thousands of dollars, in a country where the average annual income is less than $400.

But after complaints from the families of grooms, who are expected to foot the bill and agree to every request of the bride and her family, the government has been working on new laws capping the number of guests at around 300 people.

"There was an idea in the Ministry of Justice to regularize that, to bring some kind of discipline, so that the family of the bridegroom does not suffer that much," said the ministry's top adviser Mohmmad Qasim Hashimzai.

"But then some people expressed opinions - especially some experts - that it was a private issue, that we should not intrude in the private business," he said.

Hundreds of guests attend Afghan weddings held in luxurious halls or in hotels, with clothing, food and music driving up costs with brides inviting the entire community to celebrations.

The government's bid to regulate the size of celebrations follows a ban last year on expensive weddings and dowries introduced by district governments in some areas to encourage young people to marry instead of postponing their nuptials due to spiraling costs.

The national government has since sought to introduce similar laws curbing expensive weddings across the country.

Parts of the law would also crack down on sleeveless dresses worn by women or other designs thought too revealing by religious conservatives.

Critics said the laws were a reversal for women's rights harking back to the Taliban period when weddings were monitored to ensure they did not breach hardline Islamic values including a ban on music.

Hashimzai said there had been significant opposition to the proposed law within President Hamid Karzai's cabinet.

"If the parliament approves it, it may go through. But there are lots of people who've expressed an opinion ... that it should not go through deeply in private matters, as weddings are a private issue," he said.

And practically, Hashimzai said, the laws would be near impossible to enforce even if they were introduced, as it would require the government to somehow attend every wedding and count guests, as well as judge costs.

"Do we need a policeman to go and stand over there?" he said. "I suppose some people may go to the family of the bride and say there is a rule and you cannot ask us to invite more than 300 guests. There will be some leverage. But I think it will be very difficult to control it."

Gunmen kidnap Italian embassy security agent in Yemen

Unknown gunmen kidnapped on Sunday an Italian embassy security agent in Sanaa, a Western diplomat and a Yemeni security official said.

The man was taken hostage from a street close to the mission in Hadda neighbourhood in southwestern Sanaa, the diplomat said, requesting anonymity.

A security official in Sanaa confirmed to AFP that an Italian man was kidnapped and taken to an unknown destination. Police were working to identify and track the kidnappers, he said.

In Rome, a foreign ministry spokesman confirmed the kidnapping.

"We confirm that an Italian citizen working as a security agent at the embassy has been kidnapped," a ministry press officer said.

"The foreign ministry's crisis unit has been activated and is co-ordinating efforts for his release. We cannot supply any more information at this time, for risk of compromising rescue efforts," he said.

Italian news agency ANSA later cited officials as saying the man is a member of Italy's Carabinieri military police force. It also said he was picked up while in civilian clothes in a shop near the embassy.

Contacted by AFP, the ministry declined to comment on the report.

Foreigners are frequently kidnapped in Yemen by armed tribesmen, who use them as bargaining chips with the authorities.

More than 200 people have been abducted in Yemen over the past 15 years. The majority have been freed alive and well.

A French staffer with the International Committee of the Red Cross who was kidnapped in April in the northern port city of Hudaida was released earlier this month unharmed.

But a Swiss woman kidnapped by Al-Qaeda militants in March, also from Hudaida, remains a hostage.

It?s family reunion time again throughout the United States and Canada. I could just taste my mom?s peach pie already. I can not tell you offer I?ve called my mom and said ?mom I recently have to have your recipe on your pie and handmade ice-cream?. It?s been a pokey accumulation of recipes over time, but she relents every time I make a call for yet another recipe from her.

A lot of the recipe?s are actually from my grandmother who passed them on before she deceased many years ago. You know, I can still remember baking oatmeal raisin cookies with my grandmother although it?s been almost 35 years now since I last had that chance.

Given that I have an adult son and daughter of my very own my wife and I, who both desire to cook, really wanted to pass the recipes to both of them also. A number of these recipes they were raised on yet again they have kids of their own, are just start to request. My cousin also has a recipe book from her grandmother on her dad?s side. It?s too old and tattered now to apply regularly, therefore it is time it was restored and updated.

A lot of wonderful memories through the kitchen? products that I?ve lost eventually.

I wish that the idea of a recipe scrapbook ended up around after i was just a baby.

Recipe scrapbooks can be given to brothers, daughters, cousins, children or maybe about anyone. An 8.5?11 scrapbook works perfectly with the US and Canada and may be printed on any standard printer. A sports medicine doctor is one who specializes in treating a wide variety of sport-related injuries. Some have orthopedic training from completing a residency at a surgery center, but others are non-surgical doctors who completed their residencies in a family practice or other non-surgical environment. Once their residencies are done, these doctors typically complete a one to two year fellowship program that focuses on treating sports injuries.

What Types of Injuries to these Doctors See?

Amongst the common sprains, deep bruises, fractures, and broken bones, a sports medicine doctor will probably treat a wide variety of less known injuries:

Compartment Syndrome

Compartment syndrome is an extremely painful condition caused by overly swollen muscle tissue that invades the space meant for nerves and blood vessels. This condition can either be acute (caused by a one-time injury) or chronic (caused by continued overuse.)

Shin Splints

Although widely used to refer to any sort of leg pain experienced during exercise, shin splints refer specifically to pain which runs along the tibia, the large bone located in the front of the lower leg. Pain can occur in the foot and ankle, or along the inner edge of the bone.

This condition can often be avoided by using correct posture when running, completing a warm up routine which includes stretching before beginning exercise, avoiding doing too much training at once, and by wearing shoes which provide sufficient support.

Achilles Tendon Injury

The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscle to the back of the heel, and is one of the most common injuries involving muscle tendons. When this tendon is weakened through overuse or improper use, it can cause a sudden and agonizing painful injury. Achilles injuries tend to occur in middle-aged "weekend warriors" who don't exercise regularly or don't stretch before and after their fitness sessions. They are also common among athletes who play professional sports like football or basketball - those that require quick-acceleration.

Joint Dislocation

A joint is the area where two bones meet. In many contact sports (like football or basketball) or other high-impact fitness activities, athletes are prone to dislocation of certain joints like the hand or shoulder. Occasionally the knee, hip, or elbow may become dislocated, but these are not common injury sites.

A joint dislocation requires immediate medical attention, and you'll probably want to follow up with a sports medicine doctor if there are any complications during recovery.

Traumatic Brain Injury

While it's incredibly uncommon, it's not completely unlikely for a sports medicine doctor to treat a patient with traumatic brain injury. There are two major types of injury: Closed and Penetrating. A closed injury occurs when the victim's head hits another object with sudden violence, but the skull remains intact. A penetrating injury occurs when the object breaks through the skull, affecting the brain tissue below.

A concussion is the mild form of a traumatic brain injury. Many victims recover completely with plenty of rest. On the other end of the spectrum, these types of injuries can cause serious side effects, even death.

Lessons from a bad boss

This morning over breakfast, a wonderful woman I?ve just recently met was telling me about an epiphany she?d had a number of years ago during an interaction with a business coach. The coach had given her some feedback in a way that was actually unhelpful. And that moment my new friend thought, I could learn how to do this same thing ? and do it right. That insight catalyzed her into getting an executive coaching certification and ultimately transitioning from marketing into HR.

And we started talking about how to turn negative experiences into positive ones, and I began telling her about a truly bad boss I had, many years ago ? and what I learned from that experience. She said, ?You should blog about that.? So here we are.

I wrote a post a few months back called ?How to Handle Having a Bad Boss,? where I proposed four options: changing the boss, changing the company, adapting or leaving. But sometimes you can?t do any of the first three and it takes a while to figure out how to do the fourth. So, for as long you?re stuck with a bad boss, how do you deal with it in the best possible way?

Most of us handle it badly. We cycle down into anger, resentment or depression, and we act out by bitching and moaning and/or indulging in petty sabotage (?Oh, I?m sorry, I didn?t understand that you were asking me to code each of your documents with a different color. I thought you wanted me to put them all in different folders ??). Which can be momentarily satisfying, but in the long run just makes everything worse.

So, here?s how to make a silk (or at least polyester) purse from the sow?s ear that is a bad boss:

1. Learn what not to do.
My worst boss was the one I had just before I started my own company. I knew that was what I wanted to do next. So every time he did something short-sighted, small-minded, wrong-headed, controlling, I?d take a deep breath and think to myself, I will never do that when I?m a CEO, or I will never treat an employee of mine that way.

It was almost magical at times, the way it changed my mental and emotional state. It shifted me from frustration and anger about what he was doing, toward curiosity about how I could avoid doing the same thing in the future. Curiosity is a wonderful, positive state, full of synaptic firing and exploration. I sometimes actually found myself taking notes about how I would avoid making the mistakes and bad calls he was making.

And I discovered I didn?t have to wait till I actually started my own company; I applied my what-not-to-do learning immediately, with the people I managed at his company. I still find myself occasionally making a decision about how to proceed by thinking (over 20 years later) What would he have done? and then doing the opposite.

2. Sift for truth.
Even terrible bosses are right sometimes. It?s easy, when someone?s mostly lame, to assume they?re entirely lame.

With another bad boss I had, almost 30 years ago, I used to make a kind of game of sifting out the gold from the dross. If I could find one useful, smart, or insightful thing my boss did or said on a given day, I?d consider it a win. Again, it shifted my mindset away from how goofy (and irritating) he generally was, toward how brilliant he could be. It allowed me to regain some respect for him (which I?m sure he felt, and which I believe affected his behavior toward me in a positive way), and I actually ended up learning a lot.

3. Develop a Teflon shield.
I?ve been fortunate in only having had one truly mean boss for one six-month period in my whole career (I saw him for what he was, and got out of there as quickly as I could.) This guy was really bad. I decided that the only way I could keep from being emotionally damaged, during the remaining weeks or months we had together until I could find a new job, was to figure out how to become impervious to his negative, critical, insulting remarks.

That was hard for me; I?m emotionally sensitive by nature, and ? like most people ? I wanted my boss? approval and respect. I was able to do two things that really helped shield me from his awfulness.

First, I told myself every day, as a kind of mantra, This isn?t about me, it?s about him, which I knew was true: he was a very angry, insecure person, and he treated nearly everyone badly. He was saying critical things to me not because they were accurate, but because he felt compelled to be critical. The second thing I did was rely even more than usual on the positive relationships in my life. I tried to spend as little time as possible talking about my boss with the people I loved ? I didn?t want to chew up that precious time in the momentum of complaint ? but really focused on doing and talking about things that we loved and that reminded me of all things I cherish in relationship ? affection, mutual support, clear communication, fun. It served as a daily cleansing ? like washing his negativity off me with clear, fresh water.

Please understand I?m not recommending staying in a horrible boss situation any longer than you absolutely have to; these ideas aren?t intended as long-term solutions. Think of them as you would putting the "donut" spare tire on your car: they?re only meant to last till you can get it to the mechanic and have a real tire put on. But when you run into trouble on the highway ? literally or metaphorically ? it?s good to have something to see you through.

Lincoln Financial Group., a major employer in downtown Hartford, has signed a 5-year lease extension at its current headquarters in the city, according to an announcement today from Hartford?s mayor.

Hartford Mayor Pedro E. Segarra, citing a recent internal announcement by Lincoln, praised the decision to extend the lease at Metro Center on Church Street.

?I am thrilled that Lincoln has decided to stay in Hartford,? Segarra said. ?A 20-year commitment to our wonderful city is something we value and treasure ? it shows a willingness on their part to continue being a critical stakeholder in the ongoing renaissance of Connecticut?s Capital City.?

Lincoln did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

PSG 101?Entitlement - Part 2 -?Entitlement was an issue we explored in our last PSG. We are expanding on that topic by discussing how students feel they know more about subject material and how instructors should teach. This is kind of a funny "educational paradox" where the student believes him or her self to know more than the instructor. Instructors are themselves industry professionals and not only teach but practice what they teach in the professional world. In fact, this is a requirement of the instructor?s employment. In order for a student to become a professional, a continuous cycle of listening and watching other professionals is crucial to success.

The teacher / student relationship is the most complicated lesson learned in college. The misunderstanding on the student end is the amount of work required of them. Observed, consumer culture is migrating into our education. Instead of the instructor explaining and guiding through the process of learning, students are demanding what they want to learn and how they want to receive that information. These demands stress the student/teacher relationship. How can a seasoned professional deliver their knowledge if the perception is that the person delivering the knowledge is unable to perform their job? The limited amount of time given to instructors to teach, what generally takes years to perfect, makes it impossible to cover everything. Four hours in the day and eleven weeks is just enough time to fully explain basic techniques or integrate details of creating a film, once. The majority of learning takes place outside of the classroom doing projects that practice what is taught in the classroom. College learning is about mentorship and relationships. Students need to do much of their learning on their own under the guidance of the teacher. The teacher?s role is to say if the student is heading in the right direction. Making the leap from a high school style education to college education is difficult for some students. Students can not expect instructors to spoon feed them the information. What you are paying for in your continued education is the investment in yourself to be a professional. As students, we must learn to be a student and take charge of our education. Advice ? Always listen to someone who claims to be a professional in the field. Their accomplishments will speak to their expertise.?

Lobstermen finding more odd colors in the catch

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ? When a 100-pound shipment of lobsters arrived at Bill Sarro's seafood shop and restaurant last month, it contained a surprise ? six orange crustaceans that have been said to be a 1-in-10-million oddity.

"My butcher was unloading them and said, 'Oh, my gosh, boss, they sent us cooked dead lobsters,'" said Sarro, owner of Fresh Catch Seafood in Mansfield, Mass. "He then picked one up and it crawled up his arm."

Reports of odd-colored lobsters used to be rare in the lobster fishing grounds of New England and Atlantic Canada. Normal lobsters are a mottled greenish-brown.

But in recent years, accounts of bright blue, orange, yellow, calico, white and even split lobsters ? one color on one side, another on the other ? have jumped. It's now common to hear several stories a month of a lobsterman bringing one of the quirky crustaceans to shore.

It's anybody's guess why more oddities are popping up in lobster traps, said Michael Tlusty, research director at the New England Aquarium in Boston.

It could be simply because advances in technology ? cellphone cameras and social media ? make it easier to spread the word about bizarre lobster sightings.

It's also likely more weird lobsters are being caught because the overall harvest has soared. In Maine, the catch has grown fourfold in the past 20 years, to nearly 105 million pounds last year. If the yield has quadrupled, it would make sense to have four times as many unconventional lobsters being caught as well.

Although lobster is the No. 1 commercial fishery in the Northeast, there are a lot of unanswered questions about the bottom-dwelling creatures, he said.

"Are we seeing more because the Twitter sphere is active and people get excited about colorful lobsters?" Tlusty said. "Is it because we're actually seeing an upswing in them? Is it just that we're catching more lobsters so we have the opportunity to see more?

"Right now you can make a lot of explanations, but the actual data to find them out just isn't there."

Lobsters come in a variety of colors because of genetic variations.

It's been written that the odds of catching a blue lobster are 1-in-2 million, while orange comes in at 1-in-10 million. Yellow and orange-and-black calico lobsters have been pegged at 1-in-30 million, split-colored varieties at 1-in-50 million, and white ? the rarest of all ? at 1-in-100 million.

But those are merely guesses, and nobody knows for sure.

What is known is that colored lobsters have shown up in greater frequency in certain areas over the years.

The waters off Cutler in eastern Maine were once a hotbed for blue ones, after 1,500 larvae-sized blue lobsters were released in 1990 to use as a tracking tool to determine their survival rates, said Bob Bayer, executive director of the University of Maine's Lobster Institute.

The waters off Montauk, N.Y., once had a lot of blue lobsters as well, he said, after researchers released large numbers of blue lobsters there. The bright-orange lobsters that were in Sarro's shipment are believed to have come from the same waters in Canada.

Aside from their color, the lobsters are apparently normal in all other ways, Bayer said. They all turn red when they're cooked, except for the white ones since they don't have any pigment, and diners wouldn't notice a difference.

"There's no difference in taste," he said.

Scientists say it's possible the lobster population as a whole has a greater percentage of misfits than it did in years past.

The off-colored lobsters are more susceptible to predators because they stick out more on the ocean bottom, rather than blending in like normal ones, said Diane Cowan, executive director of The Lobster Conservancy in Friendship, Maine.

"But with the predator population down, notably cod, there might be greater survival rates among these color morphs that are visually easier to pick out," she said.

Lobstermen have brought Cowan countless colorful lobsters over the years. The prettiest one, she said, was pink and purple.
