World markets rise as investors watch Europe (AP)

BEIJING ? World markets rose Tuesday as traders watched for a possible deal to cut Greece's debts and Japanese factory output rebounded.

Benchmark oil rose above $99 per barrel while the dollar fell against the euro and was unchanged against the yen.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 rose 0.1 percent to 8,802.51 after data showed December industrial activity rose 4 percent over the previous month. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1.1 percent to 20,383.3 and Seoul's Kospi was up 0.8 percent at 1,955.79.

In Europe, France's CAC-40 added 0.8 percent to 3,292.38, rebounding from a 1.6 percent loss Monday. Germany's DAX gained 0.5 percent to 6,473.96, reversing a 1 percent decline a day earlier. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.6 percent to 5,703.94.

Wall Street was also set to open higher, with Dow Jones industrial futures rising 0.4 percent at 12,649 and S&P 500 futures 0.4 percent higher at 1,313.80.

Traders watched Europe following reports Greece and its creditors were close to a deal to cut its debts. Also Monday, European leaders agreed on a new treaty meant to stop overspending and put an end to the region's crippling debt woes.

"Everyone is watching the European summit and how the Greek debt crisis comes out," said Jackson Wong at Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong. "The general atmosphere is to play a wait-and-see game."

China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index was up 0.3 percent at 2,292.61 ahead of Wednesday's release of a key manufacturing index. Investors are hoping for a loosening of credit curbs if it shows activity is slowing amid lackluster global demand.

India's Sensex gained 1.5 percent to 17,109.30 while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.2 percent to 4,262.70. Benchmarks in Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia and India rose while Singapore and New Zealand fell.

European markets tumbled Monday on concerns Greece's financial problems might not be solved even if creditors agree to cancel part of its debt.

Under a tentative agreement, investors holding 206 billion euros ($272 billion) in Greek bonds would exchange them for bonds with half the face value. The replacement bonds would have a longer maturity and pay a lower interest rate. When the bonds mature, Greece would have to pay its bondholders only 103 billion euros.

Wall Street fell in early trading but Asian investors were encouraged after the Dow Jones industrial average recovered most of its losses to close down just 0.1 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 lost 0.8 percent.

Borrowing costs for the most indebted European countries shot higher. The two-year interest rate for Portugal's government debt jumped to 21 percent after trading around 14 percent last week.

Portugal may become the next country "where default is a real possibility," said Martin Hennecke of Tyche Group in Hong Kong.

"The euro zone crisis is far from being fixed at all. Italy and Spain are effectively bankrupt as well," Hennecke said. "For Asia, that means there is huge uncertainty in terms of export markets."

The treaty agreed to Monday by all European Union governments except Britain and the Czech Republic includes strict debt brakes and is aimed at making it harder for violators to escape sanctions. The 17 countries in the eurozone hope the tighter rules will restore confidence in their joint currency.

Benchmark oil for March delivery gained 98 cents to $99.76 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 78 cents to end at $98.78 per barrel on the Nymex on Monday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3207 from $1.3114 late Monday in New York. The dollar held steady at 76.25 yen.

Arab League chief heads to U.N. over Syria (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby headed to New York on Sunday hoping to win support from the U.N. Security Council for a plan to end violence in Syria that calls on President Bashar al-Assad to step aside.

Elaraby will brief the Security Council on Tuesday but the Arab initiative, which is backed by Western states, is facing resistance from Russia and China, two of the five permanent members of the council with veto powers.

The league sent observers to Syria in December to monitor whether it was heeding an earlier plan that included a call to withdraw the military from residential areas. The pan-Arab body suspended their work on Saturday after violence mounted.

The monitors, depleted since Gulf states quit the mission, are being pulled back to Damascus, a step one league source said he expected would lead to a decision by Arab states to scrap the mission. Arab foreign ministers meet on February 5.

Elaraby, the league's secretary-general, will be joined in New York by Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani, whose country heads the league's committee charged with following Syrian developments. Qatar and fellow Gulf Arab state Saudi Arabia have been leading efforts to put pressure on Assad.

"We will hold several meetings with representatives from members of the Security Council to obtain the council's support and agreement to the Arab initiative," Elaraby told reporters at Cairo airport shortly before leaving for New York.

Asked about China and Russia's reluctance to take new steps over Syria, Elaraby said he hoped the two nations would change their position. "There are contacts with China and Russia on this issue," he said.

He said the Arab monitors had gathered in Damascus and would not leave the Syrian capital until their status was decided.

INFLUENCING THE SECURITY COUNCIL

League Deputy Secretary-General Ahmed Ben Helli told reporters Arab foreign ministers meeting on February 5 would "take an appropriate decision on whether to support (the observer team), withdraw it or amend its mission."

A source in the observers operation room in league headquarters in Cairo said the head of the monitoring mission, Sudanese General Mohammed al-Dabi, was waiting for a decision from the Arab ministers on the fate of his team.

"I think personally that the Arab ministers will have no alternative to withdrawing the observers because the working conditions in Syria are extremely dangerous," the source said.

Thousands of people have been killed in a 10-month uprising against Assad's rule. Dabi, who had earlier said violence dipped after monitors arrived, said in his most recent report there had been an increase in violence in the period January 24-27.

Syria said it was surprised by the decision to suspend the monitoring work, describing the move as a bid to influence the Security Council and increase pressure for foreign intervention.

The Arab plan initially included demands for Damascus to pull the military out of residential areas, free political prisoners and start dialogue with the opposition. But Arab ministers, frustrated at the lack of progress, agreed on January 22 an initiative that called for Assad to step aside.

Some Arab states remain wary of stepping up sanctions or putting other pressure on Syria. Diplomats say some Arab states are also concerned that approaching the Security Council takes the issue out of Arab hands.

Elaraby said Algeria voiced reservations about the part of the league resolution related to informing the Security Council.

A diplomatic source from another Arab state told Reuters, regarding any move by the Security Council to impose sanctions: "If we review such cases in Iraq and other places, I think that kind of punishment didn't yield a lot."

Arabs imposed economic sanctions on Syria's government but diplomats say they have had limited impact because neighboring states such as Iraq and Lebanon did not implement them.

Gingrich wants panel to look at in vitro clinics (AP)

LUTZ, Fla. ? Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich wants a commission to study the management of in vitro fertilization clinics, where infertile couples seek treatment to allow pregnancy and large numbers of leftover embryos are discarded or stored.

Gingrich says in vitro fertilization is the creation of life, and serious study is needed of the rules covering it.

The former House speaker made his comments to reporters outside the Exciting Idlewild Baptist Church, where he had attended Sunday services.

Gingrich also says he opposes the use of leftover embryos for stem cell research, which advocates believe may lead to treatments or cures for a variety of diseases.

IVF involves creating an embryo outside a woman's body, then implanting it inside the womb. Excess embyros are believed to number in the hundreds of thousands.

Three Kazakh activists detained after rally for change (Reuters)

ALMATY (Reuters) ? A Kazakh court ordered the arrest and detention of three opposition activists Saturday for holding an unauthorised rally, at which protesters condemned the recent election as fraudulent and demanded the release of jailed colleagues.

The three were arrested hours after about 300 people, opposed to long-serving President Nursultan Nazarbayev, gathered in Kazakhstan's largest city, Almaty, calling for democratic change.

At the rally, Bolat Abilov and Amirzhan Kosanov, leaders of the opposition All-National Social Democratic Party, had demanded a transparent investigation into riots last month in the oil-producing region of Zhanaozen, the Central Asian state's deadliest violence in decades.

"After the rally, Abilov and Kosanov were brought to an administrative court in Almaty," an aide to Abilov told Reuters, requesting anonymity. "Abilov was given 18 days in custody and Kosanov 15 days for holding the unauthorised rally."

Amirbek Togusov, the head of the Social Democrats' Almaty headquarters, was put under arrest for 15 days, he said.

"We saw them off right to the threshold of the detention center. They appeared to be in good spirits and were confident in their actions," Abilov's aide said. The court could not be reached for comment because it had closed.

Abilov and Kosanov, addressing the rally, had demanded that their colleagues jailed on charges of inciting the oilmen's riots in Zhanaozen, western Kazakhstan, be freed.

It was the second peaceful protest since the January 15 parliamentary election gave Nazarbayev's Nur Otan party an overwhelming victory. After denouncing the election as rigged and faulty during an unauthorised rally on January 17, Abilov and Kosanov were fined and warned they could be arrested next time.

"WE WANT PEACEFUL CHANGE"

Saturday, the protesters had originally planned to gather at a monument to the 19th century Kazakh poet and philosopher Abai but city authorities, who denied permission for the rally, fenced off the square and unarmed police stood guard. The demonstrators gathered instead outside a nearby hotel.

"We want change, peaceful change and democratic change. We want to be reckoned with," Abilov, co-chairman of the All-National Social Democratic Party, told the crowd.

A solitary Kazakh flag waved among a crowd that was swollen by the presence of journalists and plain-clothes police. A succession of speakers took the megaphone over nearly two hours, before Muslim prayers ended the rally.

Nazarbayev, a former Soviet Communist Party boss, has ruled Kazakhstan since before independence with little tolerance for dissent. This month's election admitted three parties to parliament for the first time, but Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) observers said it lacked any genuine opposition presence.

"The election wasn't legitimate. We want them to hear us," said Ravilya, a pensioner who stood in the crowd in temperatures of minus 10 degrees Celsius. "There are more police than people. It's a good thing they're armed only with sticks," she said.

Nazarbayev, 71, is popular among most of Kazakhstan's 16.7 million population for bringing stability that has made the country's economy the most successful in ex-Soviet Central Asia.

But the riots in the oil town of Zhanaozen, which officials say killed 16, shook that image of stability. Police fired live rounds at crowds who set buildings ablaze in the town. Another person was killed in a nearby village the next day.

"We demand a just and large-scale investigation into the tragedy," Abilov said. "The president should promise that never again will weapons be used against citizens of Kazakhstan."

The prosecutor-general's office said this week that police generally acted within legal bounds when resorting to the use of weapons on December 16, but four senior officers are being prosecuted for using excessive force.

Opposition leader Vladimir Kozlov and newspaper editor Igor Vinyavsky have been detained for two months pending trial on charges of fomenting social hatred and trying to overthrow the constitutional order.

"We demand that authorities stop fighting against their opponents with such methods," Abilov said.

Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims Blast Rick Santorum On 'Equality' Comment

By Omar Sacirbey
Religion News Service

(RNS) Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus are accusing Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum of bigotry and ignorance after he said that "equality" is solely a Judeo-Christian concept.

"Where do you think the concept of equality comes from?" Santorum said on the campaign trail last Friday (Jan. 20). "It doesn't come from Islam. It doesn't come from the East and Eastern religions. It comes from the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob."

Not everyone agreed.

"Sen. Santorum's presidential campaign is now playing to the lowest common denominator of religious bigotry and prejudice by attacking Eastern religions and Islam," said Aseem Shukla of the Hindu American Foundation. Santorum's comments, Shukla added, "show a profound ignorance of the teachings of Dharma spiritual traditions, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism."

Santorum's campaign did not answer repeated requests for comment.

Critics said Santorum -- a devout Catholic -- not only has his politics wrong, but also his history.

For example, in the Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu scripture, the god Krishna writes, "I look upon all creatures equally; none are less dear to me and none more dear."

"Indian religions predate Abraham, Jacob and all that Rick Santorum was talking about," said Sulekh Jain of Sugar Land, Texas, chairman of the International School for Jain Studies. "All souls are equal in every way. All feel pain and all feel pleasure. This concept is deeply embedded in the whole philosophy of Jainism."

Sikhs, who also trace their religion to India, were equally upset.

"In Sikhism, all human beings have equal status in the eyes of God. No differentiation in status or ceremonies or rights is made between men and women, rich and poor, foreigner and countryman, high caste or low caste," said Manbeena Kaur, education director for the New York-based Sikh Coalition.

"Sikhs have had this belief in and practice of equality as a spiritual mandate long before the political revolutions that brought freedom to America and much of the Western world."

Buddhism expert Toshie Kurihara argues equality was a foundational teaching of the Buddha.

"The Buddha preached against the caste system and advocated equality of all people. From the beginning, Buddhism espoused the concept of equality of all people," she wrote last year in the Journal of Oriental Studies.

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations said it would send Santorum a copy of the Quran, Islam's holy text.

"The Quran is the best refutation of Mr. Santorum's inaccurate and offensive remarks," said Ibrahim Hooper, a CAIR spokesman.

The group cited Quran verses and sayings of Islam's Prophet Muhammad that supported equality. For example, Prophet Muhammad is reported to have said, "All people are equal as the teeth of a comb."

Costa offers $14,460 per person for ruined cruise

In this undated photo released by the Italian Navy Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, the Costa Concordia cruise ship is seen grounded off the Tuscan island of Giglio, Italy. Italian authorities have identified the bodies of three German passengers as divers kept up the search for those still missing from the Costa Concordia cruise ship that rammed into a reef off Italy. Sixteen deaths have been confirmed so far in the disaster, but three of those bodies have yet to be identified. Another 16 people are still missing from the ship, which grounded Jan. 13, but officials have acknowledged that it would take a miracle to find any more survivors. Salvage experts worked Thursday so they could begin pumping tons of fuel off the ship starting Saturday to avert an environmental catastrophe. The stricken ship lies very close to a marine sanctuary. (AP) ? Costa Crociere SpA is offering uninjured passengers euro11,000 ($14,460) apiece to compensate them for lost baggage and psychological trauma after its cruise ship ran aground and capsized off Tuscany when the captain deviated from his route.

Costa, a unit of the world's biggest cruise operator, the Miami-based Carnival Corp., also said it would reimburse passengers the full costs of their cruise, travel expenses and any medical expenses sustained after the grounding.

The agreement was announced Friday after negotiations between Costa representatives and Italian consumer groups who say they represent 3,206 cruise ship passengers from 61 countries who suffered no physical harm when the Costa Concordia hit a reef on Jan. 13.

The deal does not apply to the hundreds of crew on the ship, the roughly 100 cases of people injured or the families who lost loved ones.

Passengers are free to pursue legal action on their own if they aren't satisfied with the deal.

Some consumer groups have already signed on as injured parties in the criminal case against the Concordia's captain, Francesco Schettino, who is accused of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning the ship before all passengers were evacuated. He is under house arrest.

In addition, Codacons, one of Italy's best known consumer groups, has engaged two U.S. law firms to launch a class-action lawsuit against Costa and Carnival in Miami, claiming that it expects to get anywhere from euro125,000 ($164,000) to euro1 million ($1.3 million) per passenger.

But Roberto Corbella, who represented Costa in the negotiations, said the deal offered Friday provides passengers with quick, "generous," and certain restitution that consumer groups estimate could amount to some euro14,000 per passenger including the reimbursements.

"The big advantage that they have is an immediate response, no legal expenses, and they can put this whole thing behind them," he told The Associated Press.

Angry passenger Herbert Greszuk, a 62-year-old German who left behind everything he had with him, including his tuxedo, camera, jewelry, and even his dentures, told the AP before the compensation was announced that it was an issue of accountability.

"Something like this must not be allowed to happen again. So many people died; it's simply inexcusable," he said.

The Concordia gashed its hull on reefs off the island of Giglio after Schettino made an unauthorized deviation from its approved route to bring it closer to Giglio. Some 4,200 passengers and crew were hastily evacuated after the Concordia ran aground and capsized a few kilometers away near the port of Giglio.

Sixteen bodies have been recovered and another 16 remain unaccounted for and presumed dead. Search efforts for them resumed Friday as salvage crews prepared to begin extracting some 500,000 tons of heavy fuel oil before it leaks.

Italy's civil protection office on Friday released a list of some of the other possibly toxic substances aboard the cruise liner amid concerns of possible environmental pollution. They include 50 liters of insecticide and 41 cubic meters of lubricants, among other things.

But so far, even though there has been some film detected in the waters around the ship, tests on the waters indicate nothing outside the norm, according to Tuscany's regional environment agency.

"Toxic tests have all resulted negative," the agency said. "For now, there are no significant signs of sea water pollution."

The crystal clear seas around Giglio are a haven for scuba divers and form part of a marine sanctuary for dolphins, porpoises and whales.

Passengers have said the evacuation was chaotic, with crew members unprepared to deal with an emergency and constantly downplaying the seriousness of the situation. Coast guard data shows the captain only sounded the evacuation alarm an hour after the initial collision, well after the Concordia had listed to the point that many lifeboats couldn't be lowered.

Schettino has admitted he had taken the ship on "touristic navigation" near Giglio but has said the rocks he hit weren't charted on his nautical maps.

Codacons has called for a criminal investigation into the not-infrequent practice of "tourist navigation" ? steering huge cruise ships close to shore in a publicity stunt to give passengers a view of the sites.

The chief executive of Costa, Pier Luigi Foschi, told an Italian parliamentary committee this week that "tourist navigation" wasn't illegal, and was a "cruise product" increasingly sought out by passengers and offered by cruise lines to try to stay competitive.

Amgen to buy Micromet for $1.16 billion

(AP) ? Amgen Inc. said Thursday that it is buying Micromet Inc., a developer of cancer therapies, for $1.16 billion in cash in a bid to boost its oncology pipeline.

Amgen, the world's largest biotech company, is paying $11 per share for Micromet, a premium of 33 percent over the company's closing price Wednesday.

In premarket trading, Micromet shares leaped 33 percent, or $2.72, to $11. Over the past year, the stock has traded between $4.13 and $8.90.

Founded in Germany and based in Rockville, Md., Micromet is developing an experimental drug currently in mid-stage testing for leukemia. The treatment, called blinatumomab, is also in clinical development for the treatment of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Amgen said the purchase will give it access to proprietary antibody technology which provides a platform for future research. It will keep Micromet's research and development base in Munich, Germany.

Amgen's drugs include Neulasta, for reducing infections in chemotherapy patients, and denosumab, a bone-building drug marketed as Prolia, for treating osteoporosis in women, and in a different dosage as Xgeva, for preventing bone fractures in patients whose cancer has spread to bones.

The deal is the first one announced since Kevin Sharer announced in December he would retire as chief executive in May. Robert Bradway, president and chief operating officer, will succeed him as chief executive

Amgen, based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., is scheduled to release its quarterly results after the market closes Thursday.

USDA sets guidelines for healthier school meals (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? School meals for millions of children will be healthier under obesity-fighting U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards unveiled on Wednesday that double the amount of fruits and vegetables in cafeteria lunches - but won't pull French fries from the menu.

In the first major changes to school meals in more than 15 years, the new USDA guidelines will affect nearly 32 million children who eat at school. They will cost about $3.2 billion to implement over the next five years.

"Improving the quality of the school meals is a critical step to building a healthy future for our kids," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement.

The new meal requirements are part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act championed by first lady Michelle Obama. President Barack Obama approved the measure in late 2010.

The guidelines double the amounts of fruits and vegetables in school lunches and boost offerings of whole grain-rich foods. The new standards set maximums for calories and cut sodium and trans fat, a contributor to high cholesterol levels.

Schools may offer only fat-free or low-fat milk varieties and must assure that children are getting proper portion sizes, the USDA said.

The new standards will be largely phased in over a three-year period, starting in the 2012-13 school year.

About 17 percent of U.S. children and teenagers are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About one-third of U.S. adults are obese.

FRIES WITH THAT?

Lawmakers altered the guidelines in November. They barred the USDA from limiting French fries and ensured that pizza counted as a vegetable because of its tomato paste.

Trade associations representing frozen pizza sellers like ConAgra Foods Inc and Schwan Food Co as well as French fry sellers McCain Foods Ltd and J.R. Simplot Co were instrumental in blocking changes to rules affecting those items.

Margo Wootan, nutrition policy director for the non-profit Center For Science in the Public Interest, said that the new standards were a big improvement despite food industry lobbying and the congressional revamp.

"The new school meal standards are one of the most important advances in nutrition in decades," she said in a statement.

The Environmental Working Group said the changes could pack a financial punch since they may help reduce medical bills related to diabetes and other obesity-related chronic diseases.

"A healthier population will save billions of dollars in future health care costs," said Dawn Undurraga, EWG's staff nutritionist.

As an example of a new meal, the USDA said an elementary school lunch could be whole wheat spaghetti with meat sauce and a whole wheat roll, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, kiwi, low-fat milk, low-fat ranch dip and soft margarine.

That lunch would replace a meal of a hot dog on a bun with ketchup, canned pears, raw celery and carrots with ranch dressing, and low-fat chocolate milk.

As part of the new standards, schools will receive another 6 cents a meal. The USDA also will increase the number of inspections of school menus.

Food and beverages sold in vending machines and other school sites "will also contribute to a healthy diet," the USDA statement said.

The USDA gives school districts funds for meals through its National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs.

Could "Dead" actor's potential new role mean character's demise? (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? (Spoiler alert: Don't read this if you don't even want to think about a central "Walking Dead" character leaving.)

Is Shane doomed on "The Walking Dead"?

Actor Jon Bernthal is in talks to star in the pilot for TNT's cop drama "L.A. Noir," according to Variety. The pilot, to be directed by former "Walking Dead" showrunner Frank Darabont, would feature Bernthal as Joe Teague, a Los Angeles cop who battles local mobsters in the 1940s and '50s, which doesn't sound especially promising for his character on "The Walking Dead," Deputy Shane Walsh.

Bernthal's rep didn't immediately respond to TheWrap's request for comment on his future with either show.

Shane has certainly ticked off plenty of his fellow survivors -- he carried on an affair with the wife of his best friend (and may be the father of her unborn child). He's also butted heads with fellow survivor Dale, and set off the mass killing -- well, re-killing -- of the walkers hidden on Hershel's farm.

So, does a new job in real life (and a reunion with Darabont, from whom Bernthal has expressed much admiration) + a character who continues to alienate himself =TV Shane fated to die?

We can't look to the graphic novels that inspired the show for any clues about Shane's fate: The show's writers have said they feel free to depart from them.

"The Walking Dead" returns with new season two episodes on AMC on February 12.

Playcast snags French TV provider to debut cloud gaming service ...

Game streaming is taking a step into the European market today. Playcast Media Systems is announcing that Bouygues Telecom will launch a cloud gaming service on Internet-TV set-top boxes in France.

?Cloud gaming is becoming an important play in France,? said Guy de Beer (pictured), chief executive of Playcast, in an interview.

The new service will debut in June as an option on a million set-tops in French homes. Playcast uses streaming from game servers to bring consumers console-quality video games on their set-top boxes.

De Beer said the deal took about six months to complete and gives Playcast its first real foothold in the French market. Playcast also has services available in Portugal and Singapore.

Like rivals OnLive and Gaikai, Playcast streams games to players. It runs the games on servers in its web-connected data centers and then streams 720p video to a set-top box. You play the game using a universal serial bus (USB) game controller hooked up to the set-top box. The box then sends the commands from the controllers back to the servers.

Bouygues Telecom ?triple play? subcribers will be able to play high-quality video games on their TVs without requiring additional hardware. The company offers Bbox set-top boxes with Internet protocol TV, games, voice-over-Internet calling, and Internet connectivity.

De Beer said Playcast?s game publisher partners are Activision, Atari, Capcom, Codemasters, Disney, Sega, THQ, Warner Bros., and others. The service will offer games such as Street Fighter, Sonic Generations, MotoGP, Call of Duty (older versions), Homefront and Lego Batman. Most of the games will come from the existing library of games, but De Beer said it will include new titles as well.

Olivier Roussat, Bouygues Telecom CEO, said, ?We are very proud to be the first telecom operator in the French market to bring such high profile games franchises and AAA titles directly to our customers? TVs, through an easy-to-use interface.?

De Beer said Bouygues hopes to set itself apart in the competitive French digital TV market by offering the high-quality games, which normally would require a high-end computer or game console to play. Offering games in this way makes it more convenient for players. Bouygues uses fixed broadband technology to offer Internet protocol to IP TV partners.

Playcast was founded in 2007 and it has raised $12.5 million from MK Capital, JVP, Xenia Venture Capital and C.Mer Industries. Playcast has 40 employees. Pricing and the exact number of titles available hasn?t been disclosed. But de Beer said it will cost in the single-digit dollars per month to subscribe to the Playcast games. Rivals include OnLive and Gaikai, as well as G-cluster, owned by Japan?s Softbank. By year end, Playcast will be able to reach 10 million homes, de Beer said.

Group settings can diminish expressions of intelligence, especially among women, study finds

ScienceDaily (Jan. 22, 2012) ? Research has found that small-group dynamics -- such as jury deliberations, collective bargaining sessions, and cocktail parties -- can alter the expression of IQ in some susceptible people.

In the classic film "12 Angry Men," Henry Fonda's character sways a jury with his quiet, persistent intelligence. But would he have succeeded if he had allowed himself to fall sway to the social dynamics of that jury?

Research led by scientists at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute found that small-group dynamics -- such as jury deliberations, collective bargaining sessions, and cocktail parties -- can alter the expression of IQ in some susceptible people. "You may joke about how committee meetings make you feel brain dead, but our findings suggest that they may make you act brain dead as well," said Read Montague, director of the Human Neuroimaging Laboratory and Computational Psychiatry Unit at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, who led the study.

The scientists used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate how the brain processes information about social status in small groups and how perceptions of that status affect expressions of cognitive capacity.

"We started with individuals who were matched for their IQ," said Montague. "Yet when we placed them in small groups, ranked their performance on cognitive tasks against their peers, and broadcast those rankings to them, we saw dramatic drops in the ability of some study subjects to solve problems. The social feedback had a significant effect."

"Our study highlights the unexpected and dramatic consequences even subtle social signals in group settings may have on individual cognitive functioning," said lead author Kenneth Kishida, a research scientist with the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute. "And, through neuroimaging, we were able to document the very strong neural responses that those social cues can elicit."

The researchers recruited subjects from two universities and administered a standard test to establish baseline IQ. The results were not viewed until after a series of ranked group IQ tasks, during which test takers, in groups of five, received information about how their performances compared to those of the other group members.

Although the test subjects had similar baseline IQ scores -- a mean of 126, compared to the national average of 100 -- they showed a range of test performance results after the ranked group IQ tasks, revealing that some individuals' expressed IQ was affected by signals about their status within a small group.

The researchers wanted to know what was happening in the brain during the observed changes in IQ expression. The subjects were divided into two groups based on the results of their final rank -- the high performers, who scored above the median, and the low performers, who scored at or below the median. Two of every group of five subjects had their brains scanned using fMRI while they participated in the task.

Among the researchers' findings:

1. Dynamic responses occurred in multiple brain regions, especially the amygdala, the prefrontal cortex, and the nucleus accumbens -- regions believed to be involved in emotional processing, problem solving, and reward and pleasure, respectively.

2. All subjects had an initial increase in amygdala activation and diminished activity in the prefrontal cortex, both of which corresponded with a lower problem-solving ability.

3. By the end of the task, the high-performing group showed a decreased amygdala activation and an increased prefrontal cortex activation, both of which were associated with an increased ability to solve more difficult problems.

4. Positive changes in rank were associated with greater activity in the bilateral nucleus accumbens, which has traditionally been linked to learning and has been shown to respond to rewards and pleasure.

5. Negative changes in rank corresponded with greater activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, consistent with a response to conflicting information.

6. Neither age nor ethnicity showed a significant correlation with performance or brain responses. A significant pattern did emerge along gender lines, however. Although male and female participants had the same baseline IQ, significantly fewer women (3 of 13) were in the high-performing group and significantly more (10 of 13) fell into the low-performing group.

"We don't know how much these effects are present in real-world settings," Kishida said. "But given the potentially harmful effects of social-status assignments and the correlation with specific neural signals, future research should be devoted to what, exactly, society is selecting for in competitive learning and workplace environments. By placing an emphasis on competition, for example, are we missing a large segment of the talent pool? Further brain imaging research may also offer avenues for developing strategies for people who are susceptible to these kinds of social pressures."

"This study tells us the idea that IQ is something we can reliably measure in isolation without considering how it interacts with social context is essentially flawed," said coauthor Steven Quartz, a professor of philosophy in the Social Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory of Caltech. "Furthermore, this suggests that the idea of a division between social and cognitive processing in the brain is really pretty artificial. The two deeply interact with each other."

"So much of our society is organized around small-group interactions," said Kishida. "Understanding how our brains respond to dynamic social interactions is an important area of future research. We need to remember that social dynamics affect not just educational and workplace environments, but also national and international policy-making bodies, such as the U.S. Congress and the United Nations."

The research appears in the Jan. 23, 2012 issue of the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B in the article, "Implicit signals in small group settings and their impact on the expression of cognitive capacity and associated brain responses," by Kenneth Kishida; Dongni Yang, a former postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine; Karen Hunter Quartz, a director of research in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies of the University of California, Los Angeles; Steven Quartz; and Read Montague, corresponding author, who is also a professor of physics at Virginia Tech. The research was supported by grants from the Wellcome Trust and the Kane Family Foundation to Montague and the National Institutes of Health to Montague and Kishida.

Okay, go to the main body of the rp, [link on the first post in ooc] look under the little pink spot, the tabs are directly below it. Each tab takes you to a different part of the roleplay.
Introduction, takes you to the page where the rules and basic description of what the Rp is about.
characters are where character profiles can be made and will have links to accepted characters.
Places are the location(s) where the rp is taking place, there can be multiple places in an rp but to keep this one simple will just stick with 'Dubai' as our main location
Groups is mostly unused, but it is basically what organizations or factions are in an rp. This one will go unused for this rp.
Activity is the same as the posting tab, you just hit the button that says 'reply to this rolepay' and you will be able to make a post for your character (provided you made one that was accepted by the gm of course)
chat is the global chat for the entire site. If you still need help you can go to the chat and just ask away, most people will be helpful and point things out for you.
Posting has already been covered in activity so will skip it.
OOC take you back here to the out of character forum, sort of the personal chat for the individual forum. The tab that takes you here shoe the 10 most recent post on the ooc forum and gives you a link to the ooc forum itself.

if you need anymore help, like i said the chat is there for use and I'm always reading the OOC forum.

Can we just copy and paste our old profiles from Fanfiction to this RP?

No they divide things into predetermined sections so I am trying to figure out where stuff would fit.....

Hopefully everyone gets on soon......

I've got the bio for assassin up, you can just use that as a reference, and those sections in the character creation are just guide lines, you don't have to follow them religiously.

Yea, that works..... Everyone do what Shy did.....

Um, Honey-Heartbeat626 (using your gateway name at the moment) you might want to rething your character name... cause it's coming up as Just because I'm a Caster class, does not mak

Yea I think Sam just reverse the OC summary and OC name in the character creation......

User avatar

Names are permanent on a character bio, if you want to change it your going to have to resubmit a new character.

It always bugged me that that was the one thing you couldn't edit.

User avatar
Wake

So Shy is there anyway to copy over what we have in the RP now into this new one?

User avatar
Balzmann
Member for 0 years

That's... going to take some group coordination I think. We could try taking turns, copy and pasting our entire rp on to this site, which will take a while but do able. It's the only Idea I can think of.

The nation's weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012.

A winter storm was expected to continue affecting the eastern U.S. on Saturday, while rain and snow persisted across the Northwest. A low pressure system moved into the Ohio and Tennessee valleys. This was expected to push a series of frontal boundaries through the eastern U.S. As these systems pulled moisture onshore from the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean, this was expected to kick up a wide area of precipitation from the Gulf coast through the Appalachians, and into the Northeast. Areas of snow were expected to develop to the north and behind this system, while rain and freezing rain showers developed along this system and to the south. New York city may see up to 3 inches of snow, while the Washington D.C. area may see early morning flurries and freezing rain showers.

Meanwhile, in the West, a low pressure system was expected to move from the West Coast into the Northern Rockies, Great Basin, and Central Rockies. However, strong onshore flow was expected to persist, pushing ample moisture in from the Pacific Ocean. Moderate to heavy snow showers were expected to move into Utah and Colorado, while lighter and more widespread showers persisted in the Pacific Northwest, Northern Rockies, and northern California. Snowfall accumulations were expected to range from 3 to 7 inches in northern Utah, while 6 to 12 inches were likely in the Colorado Rockies. Meanwhile, another 3 to 6 inches were likely in the Sierra Nevadas.

Between these two systems, a ridge of high pressure was expected to build over the Plains and Midwest. This system was expected to move into the Great Lakes and Midwest throughout the day, allowing for dry and calm weather to return. However, the back side of this system was expected to see strong winds as the high pressure moves to the east and low pressure approached from the West. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a morning low of -25 degrees at Tomahawk, Wis. to a high of 89 degrees at Brady, Texas.
