Spain grumbles as king's son-in-law appears in court

PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain (Reuters) - The Spanish king's son-in-law appeared before a judge on the island of Mallorca on Saturday to respond to charges of tax fraud in a six-million-euro embezzlement case that has eroded public support for the once-popular royal family.

The scandal and other corruption cases in which politicians are accused of taking millions of euros in bribes have enraged Spaniards at a time when unemployment has soared to 26 percent in a deep recession.

Inaki Urdangarin, a former Olympics handball player who is married to the king's daughter, the Infanta Cristina, is accused of using his powerful connections to win public contracts to put on events on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca and elsewhere in Spain.

His Noos Foundation is suspected of overcharging for organizing conferences about the business of sports and hiding the proceeds abroad.

Dozens of police officials guarded the courthouse in Palma as Urdangarin got out of a car and walked down a 30-metre access ramp into the building for the closed-door hearing where he will be questioned by Examining Magistrate Jose Castro.

Near the courthouse, a few hundred protesters chanted and held up signs reading "down with the monarchy" and "they call this a democracy but it isn't".

More than a hundred journalists were also on hand.

In Spain's legal system, lengthy pre-trial investigations are carried out by an examining magistrate, or judge. Urdangarin, 45, is charged with fraud, forgery, embezzlement and corruption. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence and fines.

Urdangarin was first charged and called in for questioning in 2011, but a trial could still be months or years away as the judge continues his probe and adds or dismisses charges.

Judge Castro was expected to question Urdangarin for most of the day on Saturday and perhaps into the early hours of Sunday.

Urdangarin is fighting an order that he and a former business partner in the Noos Foundation post bail of 8.2 million euros. His assets could be seized if he does not meet bail.

The judge will also question on Saturday Carlos Garcia Revenga, former treasurer for the Noos Foundation and also private secretary to Urdangarin's wife, Cristina, 47.

Judge Castro is trying to find out how much the Infanta Cristina knew about the business of the foundation. A criminal indictment of the king's daughter would be an unprecedented accusation against a royal in Spain.

Cristina is the only one of five directors of the Noos Foundation that has not been charged with a crime.

PHOTOGRAPHS REMOVED

The royal family has taken efforts to distance itself from Urdangarin, whose official title is Duke of Palma. Photos of him have been wiped off the royal website. He has also been banned from royal family events for over a year.

In Spain's severe economic downturn, more companies announce lay-offs each week. Tens of thousands of homeowners have defaulted on their mortgages and been evicted from their homes. The government has cut public salaries and spending on health and education.

Public angst over the economy has been aggravated by a number of high-profile corruption cases from the 1990s and early 2000s, when a tax bonanza from a property boom fuelled massive public spending on events and infrastructure that now look like folly.

In another case that has rocked Spain, prosecutors are looking into millions of euros in Swiss bank accounts controlled by a former politician from the ruling People's Party, Luis Barcenas, who is charged with bribery, money laundering and tax evasion.

In Palma, where a number of corruption cases have surfaced, Urdangarin has become a despised figure.

The local government held a news event earlier this month and in front of television crews ceremoniously removed a street sign "Boulevard of the Duke and Duchess of Palma" and renamed the street.

"It's a disgrace for our islands that have been so supportive of the royal family," said Esperanza Ruiz, a resident of Palma, as she shopped in a supermarket near the courthouse.

King Juan Carlos, who took the throne in 1975, was the most popular public figure in Spain in the late 1970s because of his role in supporting the transition to democracy after the long Francisco Franco dictatorship.

But for the first time, politicians have openly called for him to abdicate and hand the throne to his son, Prince Felipe, as his prestige has eroded due to the Urdangarin case, as well as his own missteps. Metroscopia polling firm figures show his approval rating has fallen to 58 percent from much higher levels.

Last year, when Spain seemed on the brink of bankruptcy and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was imposing unpopular budget cuts, the king fell and broke his hip during an elephant hunting safari with wealthy friends in Botswana.

The king, 75, made an unprecedented public apology for the trip, which had been secret until his accident.

Portland, Ore. -- First came Major League Baseball in 2002, followed by the NFL in 2008. Now, for the first time, thanks to the explosion in vegetarian options at sports venues across the continent, PETA has ranked the top 10 most vegetarian-friendly NBA arenas, and the Rose Garden Arena, home of the Portland Trail Blazers, is number six.

"Number-six overall draft pick Damian Lillard is a favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, so it's only fitting that the Rose Garden has debuted at number six on PETA's inaugural list of the top 10 most vegetarian-friendly NBA arenas," says PETA Associate Director of Campaigns Lindsay Rajt. "And for fans hitting the Rose Garden's concession stands, coming away with healthy, humane, and delicious vegetarian fare is a slam dunk."

Among the superb offerings at the Rose Garden is the broccoli stir-fry, which can be ordered with rice or noodles. In addition to the veggie burger, vegetable sandwich on freshly baked bread, veggie wrap, and vegan protein shake, the granola bowl with vegan protein powder, berries, banana, cinnamon and agave is sure to please even the most discriminating palate. Fans in the suites sections can also enjoy vegan pasta salad with veggies and citrus-pesto vinaigrette, the vegetable rice rolls with Ponzu dipping sauce, and the stir-fried soy strips with veggies, pineapple, teriyaki sauce, peanuts, and rice.

STAPLES Center, home to both the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers, came in first place for its vegan sloppy Joes and vegetable sushi, followed by runner-up Air Canada Centre, home of the Toronto Raptors, with its chutney-topped Bollywood veggie dog, vegetarian burrito, and lettuce, tomato, and scallion veggie dog. Rounding out the top 10 are the Wells Fargo Center (Philadelphia 76ers), the BMO Harris Bradley Center (Milwaukee Bucks), Oracle Arena (Golden State Warriors), the United Center (Chicago Bulls), the AT&T Center (San Antonio Spurs), Bankers Life Fieldhouse (Indiana Pacers), and The Palace of Auburn Hills (Detroit Pistons).

To see all the delicious vegetarian offerings, please visit PETA's blog.

Italy's centre-left moves to reassure doubters

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's centre-left moved on Tuesday to quash fears that it will form a weak government after next weekend's election, saying it was committed to rapid economic reform and that outgoing premier Mario Monti must have a frontline political role.

"We are fully aware that inertia is not an option. We have no time to waste. Italy's problems are very serious and we cannot afford more recession or stagnation ... we need to deliver in terms of jobs, income, simplification," said Stefano Fassina, chief economic official in the centre-left Democratic Party.

Although markets have remained largely sanguine about the result of the February 24-25 vote, there have been rumbles this week about the chances that it will bring instability or a weak, left-leaning government unable or unwilling to carry out the difficult reforms needed to make Italy competitive.

A centre-left coalition headed by Democratic Party (PD) leader Pier Luigi Bersani is widely expected to win the vote and the most recent polls show it 4-5 points ahead of Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right.

But pollsters expect Bersani to fall short of a controlling majority in the Senate, which has equal law-making powers to the lower house, forcing it to seek support from Monti's centrists and raising the specter of a government split by disputes.

Fassina, who comes from the PD's left-wing, dismissed these fears and the suggestion that Monti, the technocrat who led Italy out of a major financial crisis last year, would refuse to ally with a centre-left coalition because of the suspicion it would be dominated by trade unions and leftists.

Monti, who is struggling to attract votes in the centre, said in an interview with Rome's Il Messaggero daily on Tuesday: "We have nothing in common with the left-wing coalition."

He has repeatedly urged Bersani to drop leftist ally Nichi Vendola of the small Left, Ecology and Freedom (SEL) party.

But Fassina told Reuters in an interview: "I guess that Monti, like us, wants to do something positive for this country. If we do not have a majority and Monti can provide the numbers for forming a stable government, why wouldn't he do it? What is the alternative? Another election in a couple of months?"

SAVIOUR

He added: "It would be difficult to explain to the rest of the world that the savior is not providing support for forming a government."

Fassina said the centre-left would seek an alliance with Monti to strengthen the government and reassure markets even if it had a majority by itself.

Despite Monti's lackluster political campaign, Fassina said the outgoing premier, "is an asset for Italy so in one way or another he should stay in the front line." Monti replaced Berlusconi in November 2011 as Italy slid towards a perilous debt crisis.

Fassina said the problems around an alliance stretching from Vendola to Monti "are enormously exaggerated," adding that Vendola had signed a pact to follow majority decisions in the coalition, in which the PD would be dominant.

"Vendola is not the extremist that people like to describe for electoral purposes," Fassina said, referring to the openly gay poet's 7-year tenure as governor of the southern region of Puglia where he has been widely described as a moderate. "There is a pretty good track record," Fassina said.

He added that he was less worried about Vendola than the danger that Monti would not get enough votes to help the centre-left form a majority because of the rise of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement and Berlusconi's centre-right, describing them both as "populist forces"

Beppe Grillo, the 5-Star leader, has been boosted by a wave of recent corruption scandals and is now running third on close to 20 percent according to polls, well ahead of Monti.

But Fassina added: "Our feeling is that with Monti we will have a majority in the Senate large enough to have a stable government, this is what we understand from the latest polls."

He said the centre-left believed the most urgent reform in Italy was to streamline a notoriously bloated and inefficient public sector, address rampant corruption and transform a byzantine system of justice that causes years of delays in civil as well as criminal cases, a major disincentive to investment.

He said a plethora of local, central and regional authorities had caused paralysis and created hundreds of small and inefficient companies providing local services. The centre-left would close many of these companies and merge others.

Despite the feeling of many senior businessmen that reforming the labor market is the most urgent measure for a new government, Fassina said existing legislation was in line with the European average.

However, he said Monti's labor reforms had failed to close the gap between highly protected older workers and young people on precarious temporary contracts. The PD would encourage permanent contracts by cutting tax costs for companies.

Fassina said Berlusconi would try to retain enough influence to protect his personal interests through blocking anti-trust and anti corruption legislation and preventing an extension of the statute of limitations that has saved him in several fraud trials.

But if a stable government was formed after this election, Berlusconi would be marginalized and lose leadership of his People of Freedom party (PDL) within two years.

Texas High School Builds Solar Powered Car

Just what is the Bullard High School Engineering class up to? They got their hands on a lot of expensive carbon fiber sheets and tubing. Now they're putting together an extremely light-weight, and expensive, but functional... thing.

KLTV.com-Tyler, Longview, Jacksonville, Texas | ETX News

We just had to go to Bullard to show us this thing.

It's certainly symmetrical, but it looks like a series of tubes held together with tape. It can't be very sturdy. What the heck are these crazy kids getting high school credit for?

"We're building a solar car from the ground up using composite materials. We're actually the only ones in the United States using this patent. It was a technology that was developed in Poland, and we figured it was perfect for our car," said Bullard High School senior Austin Gwartney.

Cullen Hippler and Austin Gwartney explained the car will be moved to Dallas this July, be judged, and then driven to California without ever stopping for gas over an eight day period. It's called the Winston Solar Car Challenge. Teams are judged based on the miles they put on the car, not the speed.

"We're looking at about 25 teams entered from across the country, and maybe even a few international teams as well," Cullen stated.

It's only open to high school students, and there are a whole bunch of rules. It's not uncommon to be disqualified before the race even begins.

"We've re-checked and checked to make sure we've got all out T;s crossed and I's dotted. That way we will be able to assure we will be able to compete this year," Cullen stressed.

Other teams have used carbon fiber, but not tubing, because you can't weld it. Their solution? The Polish patented technique using carbon fiber to stitch it together. It's not cheap.

"These pipes are $30 a foot, just for the piping. Then each joint that you see has about another 30-plus dollars just in wrapping it," Austin revealed.

And the solar panels?

"Most teams use prefabricated solar panels," Cullen said.

But they are building their own. I suggested if they run out of sunlight, they can use flashlights.

"Is that against the rules?" I asked.

"Yes," The engineering teacher laughed.

Good thing they knew that. I almost got them disqualified.

The students have raise quite a bit of money for the project, but they need quite a bit more, and a trailer to haul the car around.

Love of musical harmony is not nature but nurture

Feb. 14, 2013 ? Our love of music and appreciation of musical harmony is learnt and not based on natural ability, a new study by University of Melbourne researchers has found.

Associate Professor Neil McLachlan from the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences said previous theories about how we appreciate music were based on the physical properties of sound, the ear itself and an innate ability to hear harmony.

"Our study shows that musical harmony can be learnt and it is a matter of training the brain to hear the sounds," Associate Professor McLachlan said.

"So if you thought that the music of some exotic culture (or Jazz) sounded like the wailing of cats, it's simply because you haven't learnt to listen by their rules."

The researchers used 66 volunteers with a range of musical training and tested their ability to hear combinations of notes to determine if they found the combinations familiar or pleasing.

"What we found was that people needed to be familiar with sounds created by combinations of notes before they could hear the individual notes. If they couldn't find the notes they found the sound dissonant or unpleasant," he said.

"This finding overturns centuries of theories that physical properties of the ear determine what we find appealing."

Coauthor on the study Associate Professor Sarah Wilson also from the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences said the study found that trained musicians were much more sensitive to dissonance than non-musicians.

"When they couldn't find the note, the musicians reported that the sounds were unpleasant, whereas non-musicians were much less sensitive," Assoc. Prof Wilson said.

"This highlights the importance of training the brain to like particular variations of combinations of sounds like those found in jazz or rock."

Depending on their training, a strange chord or a gong sound was accurately pitched and pleasant to some musicians, but impossible to pitch and very unpleasant to others.

"This showed us that even the ability to hear a musical pitch (or note) is learnt," Assoc. Prof Wilson said.

To confirm this finding they trained 19 non-musicians to find the pitches of a random selection of western chords. Not only did the participants ability to hear notes improve rapidly over ten short sessions, afterward they reported that the chords they had learnt sounded more pleasant -- regardless of how the chords were tuned.

The question of why some combinations of musical notes are heard as pleasant or unpleasant has long been debated.

"We have shown in this study that for music, beauty is in the brain of the beholder," Assoc. Prof McLachlan said.

The study was published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General.

Review: Park Plaza Sherlock Holmes, London

Simply the best? char-grilled steak with a slice of Sherlock

When choosing a London hotel, do you opt for comfort, facilities or location first? I?m a huge fan of the cosmopolitan Park Plaza brand and their Sherlock Holmes hotel is certainly perfectly located for commuters and tourists alike, being walking distance from?Madame Tussauds and the?Sherlock?Holmes?Museum. Marylebone High Street and Oxford Street.

But it is other aspects of this capital attraction that really makes it stand out. The bar is so-so ? too busy with after-work drinkers for my liking ? service took an age and there was no easy way to browse the Holmes memoribillia on show. But my stay was made?memorable?by potentially the best chargrilled steak I?ve had in the capital and an overnight in one of three Loft Suites ? a treat, indeed.

The steak was served with a flourish as part of a hilarious meal with an old friend in the?AA Rosette award-winning restaurant, The Grill. I?m a West country girl, so a starter of Somerset goat?s cheese and beetroot salad, followed by South-West sourced grain-fed rib eye beef cooked to perfection, should really be saved for my birthday. Accompanied by warm homemade breads and chunky chips, it was happiness on a plate.

The restaurant design is bright yet soothing, with relaxed open-plan dining and a gorgeous aroma from the?mesquite wood-burning oven. Service is swift yet attentive and I loved the simplicity of the Grill menu.

Now the loft suites intrigue me, as they seem to follow a trend in London recently for apartment style living with the benefits of a hotel service. Apartments are ideal for business travellers looking for a home from home, or indeed those looking for long-term accommodation in the capital, or returning expats making the transition back to Blighty.

The suites at Park Plaza Sherlock Holmes include a massive bed, plush bathroom with power shower, flatscreen TV, and a separate work/living area, perfect for after-dinner drinks and a catch-up away from the bustle of the Sherlock bar. There is even a guest bathroom for added convenience on the ground floor.

Those staying on a weekend can enjoy the Aurora spa and explore the area. I only had a quick dinner then back to work, for my sins. But Loft living has made its impression on me ? I may be ruined for life?

Preventing obesity transmission during pregnancy

A much neglected part of the obesity epidemic is that it has resulted in more overweight/obese women before and during pregnancy. Their offspring also tend to have higher birth weights and more body fat, and carry an increased risk of obesity and chronic diseases later in life. However, the nutritional factors and mechanisms involved pre and during pregnancy that may influence child obesity remain uncertain. A recent publication by ILSI Europe identifies and discusses key contributing factors leading to obesity.

In an article recently published in Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism, potential key contributors to obesity, including nutrition, during and after pregnancy were identified. Prenatal factors may include maternal diet, gestational weight gain and metabolic perturbations during pregnancy. Postnatal diet and feeding practices along with activity patterns and family lifestyle may also modify or determine the long-term health risks.

A majority of clinical studies have examined maternal dietary information in isolation. Combining the large number of current maternal and infant studies and including analysis of both sets of nutritional data would be a great step forward. The publication indicates that "this introduces the challenge of how to unify the findings made, as each study varies considerably in the breadth and depth of dietary data collected".

In addition, with regard to gestational weight gain, Prof Michael Symonds, University of Nottingham, UK highlighted that it "should not be used on its own but in a larger context. It should be complemented by measures of body composition, metabolic and endocrine responses in the mother and offspring". Better knowledge of these contributors and the mechanisms involved could result in more targeted nutritional advice to women, especially those that are obese, to improve nutrition and health status before, during or after pregnancy. It is vitally important to prevent (the development of) excess fat mass to both the mother's own, and their infant's future health.

The publication summarises the conclusions of a workshop organised by the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Europe in October 2011. This work has been commissioned by the Metabolic Imprinting Task Force of ILSI Europe.

Folic acid supplements early in pregnancy may reduce child's risk of autism by 40 percent

Folic acid supplements early in pregnancy may reduce child's risk of autism by 40 percent

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Prenatal folic acid supplements appear to reduce the risk for autistic spectrum disorders, according to a study published today (February 13) in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that about 1 in 88 children in the U.S. have been identified with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASDs are amongst the most heritable of mental disorders, but little is known about how the disorder develops. Consequently, methods for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment are limited.

Folic acid (Vitamin B9) is required for DNA synthesis and repair in the human body, and its naturally occurring form?folate?is found in leafy vegetables, peas, lentils, beans, eggs, yeast, and liver. Taking folic acid supplements during early pregnancy is known to protect against spina bifida and other neural tube defects in children. In the United States, Canada, and Chile, folic acid is added to flour, so as to automatically provide these supplements to consumers. Norway does not enrich its flour, and since 1998, the Norwegian Directorate of Health has recommended that all women planning to become pregnant take a daily supplement of folic acid from one month before the start of pregnancy through the first trimester.

Despite this policy, studies from North America and Europe have shown that many pregnant women have a lower dietary intake of folate than what is necessary to prevent neural tube defects.

The report in JAMA emerged from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and its sub-study of autism, the Autism Birth Cohort (ABC) Study. This international collaboration (see list of members below) comprises the largest prospective birth cohort devoted to the investigation of gene-environment interactions and biomarker discovery for neuropsychiatric disorders.

A total of 85,176 MoBa babies?born from 2002-2008?and their parents participated in the study. Prenatal dietary habits were recorded, and families were regularly surveyed for 3-10 years to measure the development of autism spectrum disorders. A total of 270 cases of autism spectrum disorders were identified in the study population (114 autistic disorder; 56 Asperger syndrome; 100 atypical or unspecified autism; i.e., pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified, PDD-NOS).

Mothers who took folic acid supplements in early pregnancy had a 40% reduced risk of having children with autistic disorder compared with mothers who did not take folic acid. The reduction in risk was observed in those who took folic acid during the time interval from 4 weeks before to 8 weeks after the start of pregnancy. Autistic disorder is the most severe form of autism spectrum disorders in children. No reduction in risk was observed for PDD-NOS. For Asperger syndrome, the number of children was too low to obtain sufficient statistical power in the analyses.

The use of folic acid in early pregnancy increased substantially from 2002 to 2008 among women who participated in MoBa. In 2002, 43% of mothers took folic acid supplements; by 2008, 85% of mothers did. However, many women began taking folic acid later than recommended, and only half started before the beginning of pregnancy.

The timing of a mother's intake of folate appears to be a critical factor. Her child's risk of autism was reduced only when the supplements were taken between 4 weeks before to 8 weeks after the start of pregnancy.

"We examined the rate of autism spectrum disorders in children born to mothers who did or did not take folic acid during pregnancy. There was a dramatic reduction in the risk of autistic disorder in children born to mothers who took folic acid supplements," says P?l Sur?n, first author and epidemiologist at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH).

The researchers also analyzed whether the risk of autistic disorder was influenced by the use of other dietary supplements. They did not find any association between the mother's use of fish oil supplements (cod liver oil and omega-3 fatty acids) in early pregnancy and the risk of autistic disorder, and no association for the mother's use of other vitamins and minerals.

In recent years, researchers have started to investigate whether folic acid has other beneficial effects on the development of the fetus' brain and spinal cord. A study of language development from MoBa, published in 2011, showed that children whose mothers took folic acid supplements in early pregnancy had only half the risk of severe language delay at age three years compared with other children. A separate 2011 study from the University of California, Davis, demonstrated a lower risk of autism spectrum disorders in children of mothers who had used prenatal vitamin supplements during pregnancy. Prenatal vitamin supplements contain folic acid in combination with other vitamins and minerals.

Joint senior author Ezra Susser, professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and professor of Psychiatry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, stated, "Our findings extend earlier work on the significance of folate in brain development and raise the possibility of an important and inexpensive public health intervention for reducing the burden of autism spectrum disorders."

"This elegant work illustrates the power of the ABC cohort for not only chipping away at the riddle of what causes autism, but for developing new methods for early recognition, prevention and treatment," says W. Ian Lipkin, John Snow Professor of Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health and principal investigator of the ABC cohort.

Thai marines kill 16 militants who attacked base

NARATHIWAT, Thailand (AP) ? Marines fending off a major militant assault on their base in Thailand's violent south killed 16 insurgents in an overnight shootout, authorities said Wednesday. It was the deadliest toll the Muslim guerrillas suffered since more than 100 died in a single day nearly a decade ago.

About 30 militants wearing military-style uniforms attacked the marine corps base in Bacho district in Narathiwat province just after midnight Wednesday, said Capt. Somkiat Ponprayun, the provincial marine corps special task force chief.

The shootout ended with 16 militants killed and the rest fleeing, Somkiat said. The death toll was reduced from the initial figure of 19 given out earlier Wednesday by regional army spokesman Col. Pramote Promin.

He said the insurgents ? most of them armed and wearing flak jackets ? opened fire at the base and were counterattacked by the security forces. Authorities confiscated 13 rifles, 3 pistols and a pickup truck at the scene.

Somkiat said the marines who fended off the attack suffered no casualties, as they had been tipped-off by the locals and prepared for the assault.

"There have been frequent attacks this month, so every unit has been on the lookout. Officers have been assigned on a night watch at every base," Somkiat told reporters. "This week, residents in Bacho district have also informed the soldiers of small armed movement here and there, which put us on extra alert."

Fighting in Thailand's three southernmost provinces has occurred on a near daily basis since the insurgency flared anew in 2004, and more than 5,000 people have been killed. Security forces, as well as teachers, have been targeted by insurgents because they are seen as representatives of the government.

Muslims in the deep south, a Muslim-majority region in the Buddhist-dominated country that was once independent, have long complained of discrimination by the central government in Bangkok, and the insurgents are thought to be fighting for autonomy. But the insurgency itself remains murky, with militants making no public pronouncements on their goals.

The losses Wednesday were the most since guerrillas launched simultaneous attacks on police stations and checkpoints in the three provinces in April 2004, triggering clashes in which more than 100 militants were killed, 32 of them at the Kreu-Sae mosque in Pattani where they were holed up.

The Thai government has attempted to gain support from local residents and separatist sympathizers in solving the insurgency issues throughout the past decade, but progress has been slow. However, experts said the militant's targeting of soft targets such teachers and civilians might have made the locals turn to the authorities.

"Some sympathizers are now fed up with the widespread, unspecific killings from the militants because they, too, are affected by the losses," said Jaran Maluleem, a Muslim expert and political scientist at Thammasat University in Bangkok. "Still, the government must be able to explain to the public why this mass killing of insurgents is justified."

Cmdr. Thammanoon Wanna, who oversees the marine corps base, said the troops had braced for Wednesday's assault after authorities discovered a sketch that mapped out the insurgents' plans on a militant who was shot dead in recent days.

Regional army commander Lt. Gen. Udomchai Thammasaroraj said in an interview on ThaiPBS channel that the army has declared a curfew for the area within 5 kilometers (3 miles) of the base for Wednesday night into Thursday. Security forces have conducted searches to find the rest of the fleeing militants, some of whom are believed to have been wounded.

"The insurgents were uplifted because of a surge in their successful attacks in recent weeks, so this is a significant loss on their side," said Sunai Phasuk, a Bangkok-based researcher for Human Rights Watch. "From now, authorities will certainly have to be very concerned about their retaliation."

Narathiwat is located 800 kilometers (500 miles) south of Bangkok.

On Sunday, suspected militants killed five soldiers and wounded five others in two attacks that included a car bomb blast in Yala province that was detonated as a truck carrying six soldiers passed. The militants then opened fire on the soldiers, killing five of them, and took away the dead soldiers' rifles.

Officials from security agencies are scheduled to meet Friday to discuss safety measures for the southernmost provinces.

Another World now available on BB10, several other classics on the way

Eric Chahi's seminal game work, Another World, is now available on BlackBerry 10 devices (so ... uh, those of you with a Z10, though it also works on PlayBook). And not just any version, but the 20th Anniversary Edition, which adds updated graphics, a remastered soundtrack, and some gesture controls. The game's one of several titles that publisher DotEmu is bringing to BB10, including notoriously difficult shooter R-Type. "Another World 20th Anniversary is our first title on Blackberry. It's currently available on Playbook and Z10, and in the upcoming weeks on Q10," DotEmu CEO Xavier Liard tells us. As for the future? "Of course we are considering bringing all our Android games to BB10, but the next game to be most likely released would be R-Type." Given that DotEmu also publishes Neo-Geo titles on Android, it's not a surprise that the company is also considering bringing those titles over, though there's nothing to announce just yet. "We can't say yet if it will be on BB10 or not as it is SNK Playmore decision," CTO Romain Tisserand says.

With Another World priced at $5 -- a dollar more than its iOS version -- we expect similar pricing across the board. But then again, we always hope it'll be less expensive to re-buy 20-year-old games. The price of nostalgia, eh?

Senate panel approves Hagel for Pentagon chief

(AP) ? A bitterly divided Senate panel on Tuesday voted to approve President Barack Obama's nomination of Chuck Hagel to be the nation's defense secretary at a time of turmoil for the military with looming budget cuts, a fresh sign of North Korea's nuclear ambitions and drawdown of U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

The Armed Services Committee voted 14-11 to send the nomination to the full Senate, with all the panel's Democrats backing the president's choice to succeed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. The committee's Republicans were unified in their opposition to their onetime colleague, a former two-term Republican senator from Nebraska and twice-wounded Vietnam combat veteran.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he would move ahead with a full Senate vote despite Republican complaints that he was "jamming it through." A vote is expected on Thursday, and barring any surprises, the Senate is likely to confirm Hagel for the president's second-term national security team.

Hagel, 66, would take charge of a military facing deep cuts in projected spending; challenges from North Korea, Iran and Syria; and the reduction of U.S. combat forces in Afghanistan.

Democrats, who hold a 55-45 edge in the Senate, have the numbers to confirm Hagel on a majority vote, but would need the support of five Republicans before an up-or-down vote on the president's Cabinet choice would be allowed.

More than a dozen Republicans oppose the nomination, and the committee's ranking Republican, Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, is insisting that any confirmation be based on 60 votes rather than a majority of the Senate. But several Republicans reject what would be an unprecedented effort to delay a vote on a Cabinet nominee for defense secretary.

Hagel faces fierce opposition from Republicans who have challenged his past statements and votes on Israel, Iran, Iraq and nuclear weapons. Just hours before Tuesday's vote, foes circulated a memo arguing for more information about Hagel's personal finances and highlighting past statements by Democratic senators demanding further disclosures when the Senate considered nominees by Republican presidents.

The panel's chairman, Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., said the GOP demands were beyond the scope of those traditionally asked of previous nominees, Republican and Democrat ? a point echoed by his Republican colleague, Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

But Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, continued to demand that Hagel provide personal financial information for the past five years instead of the standard two years of committee and Senate rules, and suggested that the panel doesn't know whether Hagel received compensation from "extreme and radical groups." He also suggested that Hagel was hiding information.

That angered Levin, who rejected the notion of a different standard for Hagel than for other nominees and said he was "not going to accept your suggestion and innuendo."

Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., accused Cruz over going over the line.

"You basically have impugned the patriotism of the nominee" with suggestions that he is cozy with Iran, Nelson said. "You also stated your opinion that you don't think he's truthful. Those are two fairly strong statements."

Inhofe said reported comments about Iranian leaders praising Hagel backs up Cruz's claim. "You can't get cozier," the panel's top Republican said.

The testy exchanges about Hagel prompted McCain to interject, "Sen. Hagel is an honorable man. No one on this committee should impugn his character and integrity."

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., insisted that the former GOP senator was out of the mainstream. "He's in a league of his own," Graham said.

McCain, who was a close friend of Hagel's but split over the Iraq war and politics, said Tuesday he would vote against confirmation. However, late Monday McCain met privately with several committee Republicans and urged them not to filibuster the nomination, pointing out that the roles could be reversed someday with a Republican president and GOP-controlled Senate.

"I'm encouraging my colleagues if they want to vote against Sen. Hagel that's one thing, and that's a principled stand," McCain told a group of reporters. "We do not want to filibuster. We have not filibustered a Cabinet appointee in the past and I believe that we should move forward with his nomination, bring it to the floor and vote up or down."

All 55 Democrats are expected to back Hagel, and two Republicans ? Sens. Thad Cochran of Mississippi and Mike Johanns of Nebraska ? have said they will vote for the nominee. At least five Republicans have said they oppose a filibuster despite their reservations or opposition toward the nominee.

More than a dozen Republicans have said they will oppose their former colleague, and several others have indicated they are likely to vote no. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., a member of the Armed Services Committee, said Tuesday she would vote against the nominee, citing his performance at his confirmation hearing.

Hagel seemed ill-prepared under withering cross-examination from committee Republicans in nearly eight hours of testimony on Jan. 31. He was repeatedly pressed about past statements and votes on Israel, Iran and nuclear weapons, with GOP lawmakers suggesting he wasn't sufficiently supportive of Israel or anti-Iran.

In the memo circulated Tuesday, Republicans focused on the 2005 fight over President George W. Bush's nomination of John Bolton to be ambassador to the United Nations, and Democrats who tried to stop the nomination. The position is not Cabinet-level, however.

Faced with a Democratic filibuster, Bush circumvented the Senate and made Bolton a recess appointment.

Graham has signaled that he would block the nominations of Hagel and CIA Director-designate John Brennan if he doesn't get more answers about the deadly raid on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, in September.

"I'm insisting that the president answer ... what he did that night. That's all. It would take five minutes to answer my question," Graham told reporters. "It's the only leverage I have."

The White House pushed back Monday, with spokesman Jay Carney insisting the administration had answered lingering questions about Libya and the president's actions on that fateful day.

"What is unfortunate here is the continuing attempt to politicize an issue, in this case through nominees that themselves had nothing to do with Benghazi, and to do so in a way that only does harm to our national security interests," Carney said. "Sen. Hagel, Mr. Brennan, they need to be confirmed."

Vertigo, Dizziness & Thyroid Dysfunction ? The Perimenopause Blog

I didn?t expect when I began February blog posts on vertigo and dizziness in perimenopause that I would be coming full circle back to a discussion on?thyroid dysfunction, which I blogged about considerably last month.

But, I am.

Women going through perimenopause often experience secondary health issues such as adrenal fatigue and some type of thyroid dysfunction, on top of their estrogen and progesterone levels yo-yoing all over the charts. It just doesn?t seem fair does it?

It can be quite confusing and overwhelming when so many things seem to wron all at once, I know.? But, the good news (if there is any) is that thyroid dysfunction can help explain a lot of it.

But, let me clarify something:? The chances of your physician telling you that thyroid dysfunction is causing a lot of your symptoms in perimenopause is slim to none.

Most physicians find their medical practice sweet spot as it were, and that?s pretty much where they stay.? They are usually not too willing to think outside of that box.? I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I suspect you already know this anyway, right?

That said, let me tell you about a book I ran across recently which might help explain a lot of the strange symptoms women experience in perimenopause, i.e., vertigo and dizziness.? The title of the book is The Thyroid Solution: A Revolutionary Mind-Body Program That Will Help You, by Dr. Ridha Arem, M.D.

Women going through perimenopause often suffer from thyroid dysfunction and don?t even know it

The book is broken up into four parts:

  • Part I describes the emerging knowledge about the thyroid-mind connection and how thyroid imbalance is likely to affect not only physical health but also mood, emotions, and behavior
  • Part II presents in-depth information on how thyroid imbalances may affect weight, your sex life, and relationships.
  • Part III is devoted to women?s health issues, especially infertility, miscarriage, postpartum depression, PMS, and menopause
  • Part IV is the practical application of the book, providing tools to determine how healthy your thyroid is and what to do if you are suffering with thyroid dysfunction.

I?m telling you about this book, because I believe there is a connection between thyroid dysfunction and many of the symptoms of perimenopause.? I?m also telling you about it because women suffer with thyroid dysfunction during perimenopause and often don?t even know it.

I?m telling you about it because I want you to be as informed as possible if you are experiencing dizziness and vertigo, and you plan to see a physician for your symptoms. ?And at the very least, I?m telling you about it because I don?t want you to think you?re going crazy, or that you?re over-reacting, or imagining your symptoms.

You?re not.

Dr. Arem lists dizziness, vertigo, panic, and anxiety as symptoms of thyroid dysfunction.? That is not to say that these symptoms are always going to be associated with thyroid dysfunction.? But, if you are experiencing these symptoms in perimenopause, it?s not a bad place to start.

Dr. Arem also addresses the problems associated with properly diagnosing thyroid dysfunction ? mainly issues with how to test for it.? In fact, I suspect this testing controversy is at the root of most of the problems in misdiagnosing thyroid dysfunction.

If you are cheap like me, you should be able to find a used copy at Amazon.? I think I paid a penny for my copy, plus shipping.? Do yourself a favor and pick up the book right away.? It?s easy to read and will answer a lot of your questions!

I will discuss sections of the book throughout the month of February as we continue our conversation on vertigo and dizziness in perimenopause. ?So come on back!

PFT: Niners TE Walker could seek starting job

With the Rams scoring a major victory in the recently-concluded arbitration aimed at determining what it will take to make the Edward Jones Dome a first-tier stadium, the Rams have the clear upper hand.

And the powers-that-be in St. Louis know it.

But the best they can do is point out the fact that, if the team ultimately moves, it can?t happen for two more seasons.

?To be honest, everybody ought to take a deep breath,? St. Louis County policy wonk Mike Jones told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.? ?The reality is nothing really happens before the 2015 season.?

That?s fine, but if the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission decides not to give the Rams the upgrades to which the arbitrators decided the Rams are contractually entitled, then the Rams can leave after the 2014 season.? Or in any year thereafter.

The CVC has 60 days to decide whether to do what the arbitrators have ordered.? But it sounds like the CVC won?t do what the arbitrators have decided the CVC must do to prevent the Rams from becoming free agents.

?The options are all theirs.? Not ours,? CVC president Kathleen ?Kitty? Ratcliffe said. ?There is no specific plan at this point.?

In other words, the CVC won?t be providing the upgrades.? Instead, they?ll commence shifting blame for the eventual relocation.

?[The arbitrators] did us a favor with that ruling,? Jones explained.? ?Now the community can have a broader conversation about the Rams.? And the CVC is not the tip of the spear for that conversation.?

Actually, the CVC is the tip of the spear.? Because the CVC negotiated the lease that, after the 2014 season, the Rams can disregard.

And a real ?favor? from the arbitration panel would have been issuing a ruling that the CVC?s $120 million plan for upgrading the stadium was the right one.? Because then the Rams wouldn?t have been able to leave.

Now, they are.

When the silver lining is ?Well, we have them for two more years,? it?s like saying the glass is five percent full.
