5 great movies about airplanes (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? "Red Tails," in theaters this weekend, is about the first black fighter pilots in the United States: the Tuskegee Airmen who finally saw battle in the skies over Europe during World War II. It's a story that's very much worth telling; the film itself, however, is hokey and old-fashioned.

Still, it's a good opportunity to take a look at five movies about airplanes that really do soar:

? "Airplane!" (1980): Not just one of the best airplane movies ever, not just one of the best comedies ever. This is one of my absolute favorite movies ever, regardless of genre. When the LA Film Critics Association asked its members to fill out a questionnaire and choose one movie everyone should see, I didn't pick "Citizen Kane." I picked this. It's a dead-on spoof of all those 1970s "Airport" disaster movies, the one to which all subsequent parodies have aspired. The tone is so perfect, the cast is so great, and the script is so jammed with classic lines. And while the whole exercise is completely silly, "Airplane!" is also very precise in its language, in the details within the sight gags. This kind of comedy is really hard to do just right without going overboard; the writing-directing team of Jim Abrahams and David and Jerry Zucker found that balance.

? "Wings" (1927): This was the first film to win the Academy Award for best picture and the only silent film ever to achieve that honor. A restored print of "Wings" recently was shown to a packed house at the Motion Picture Academy with live organ accompaniment, and it was a huge treat to see it in that setting. This tale of World War I fighter pilots, starring Charles Rogers, Richard Arlen and an insanely adorable Clara Bow, was at the time the most expensive movie Paramount had ever made. The budget was set at $1.2 million but it ballooned to $2.1 million. Director William Wellman insisted that his actors take flying lessons so the aerial scenes would look more realistic, and to this day they remain thrilling. "Wings" is also notable for the presence of a young Gary Cooper, although he's only in it for about two minutes; Arlen's Boston terrier gets more screen time.

? "United 93" (2006): Paul Greengrass' reenactment of the hijacking of United Airlines Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001, which crashed into a Pennsylvania field after passengers foiled the terrorist plot, sounded like a daunting prospect. We know all too well how it's going to end long before it begins, and his documentary-style realism would surely add to the agony. But it is that very realism and Greengrass' respectful attention to detail that make it impossible not to feel engrossed with every fiber in your being. "United 93" provokes a rare physical reaction: It makes your muscles tense up, makes you sit straight-backed in your seat, digging your nails into the armrests. Many films purport themselves, in blurb-friendly verbiage, to be edge-of-your-seat thrillers. This one really is.

? "Top Gun" (1986): This is the 1980s in film form: all the bombast and patriotism, all the big hair and shoulder pads, with Tom Cruise at the height of his powers playing a fighter pilot named ? in all seriousness ? Maverick. Cruise was still young and sexy back then, and "Top Gun" wasn't exactly subtle in celebrating his cocky, brash screen persona. Or as his superior puts it in scolding him: "Son, your ego is writing checks your body can't cash." Cruise, Anthony Edwards and Val Kilmer play students at an elite flying academy. Cruise wins over his instructor (Kelly McGillis) by getting an entire bar to sing "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" to her. It's big and cheesy and totally irresistible.

? "North by Northwest" (1959): This is a cheat, I will acknowledge that. But the crop-duster scene is so iconic that when I think of movies about airplanes, I think of this. It isn't just one of the most famous scenes in an Alfred Hitchcock film, it's one of the most famous scenes in film history, period. Cary Grant, a victim of mistaken identity who finds himself wrongly accused of murder, goes on the run. In his hunt for clues to the mystery he's gotten himself tangled in, he winds up on a rural highway in the middle of nowhere, where he's repeatedly buzzed by an armed crop-dusting plane. Decades later, this sequence remains chilling, with the menacing whirr of the plane's engine and the crunch of Grant's feet desperately pounding the dirt providing an increasingly tense rhythm.

Sharapova, Ivanovic into 3rd round in Australia (AP)

MELBOURNE, Australia ? The delayed preparation is working well for Maria Sharapova so far at the Australian Open, where she has reached the third round after just two hours on court.

The 2008 Australian Open winner had a 6-0, 6-1 second-round win over U.S. qualifier Jamie Hampton in 64 minutes on Thursday, two days after beating Argentina's Gisela Dulko by the same margin.

Sharapova did not play in any warmup events and spent nearly two weeks in Melbourne ahead of the season's first major while she rested an injured left ankle.

There was no indication of any problems with the ankle on Thursday, but the 24-year-old Russian wasn't really tested by No. 144-ranked Hampton, who has only ever won one match at a Grand Slam.

"It was more about getting my feet going ... worrying about myself," Sharapova said. "Yeah, started my preparations in the offseason a little late, took a bit of extra time in practice instead of rushing into a tournament."

She'll meet either Stephanie Dubois of Canada or 30th-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany in the next round.

Seventh-seeded Vera Zvonareva, a two-time semifinalist at Melbourne Park, had a 6-1, 7-6 (3) over Lucie Hradecka. No. 21 Ana Ivanovic also advanced, beating Dutch player Michaella Krajicek 6-2, 6-3.

Sharapova is one of three former champions still in contention. Serena Williams was bidding to extend her winning streak to 16 matches at Melbourne Park when she played Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in the subsequent match on Rod Laver Arena. Williams won back-to-back titles in 2009 and '10 but missed last year's tournament due to injuries.

Defending champion Kim Clijsters is into the third round on the other half of the draw.

Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki is aiming for her first major tile, and is one of four women in the draw who can finish the tournament at No. 1.

After her 6-1, 7-6 (4) second-round win over Anna Tatishvili on Wednesday, she asked how her boyfriend might be able to help.

She smiled, paused, then relayed some of the advice Rory McIlroy offered that helped him overcome similar pressure and win a golf major.

"Well, it's just about you can't really do anything about the past," Wozniacki said. "You just need to look forward. You have a tournament now, and you want to do the best you can. That's it.

"Then if it goes well, it's great. If not, you have the next one. It's like tennis."

McIlroy was considered a major golf talent on the cusp of a breakthrough when he blew a four-stroke lead and lost last year's Masters. He handled it with such humility that it didn't surprise anyone when he rebounded to win the U.S. Open two months later, when he was 22.

Wozniacki is into a third-round match against No. 31 Monica Niculescu. A win could put her on course for a quarterfinal match against Clijsters, who routed Stephanie Foretz Gacon of France 6-0, 6-1.

Clijsters will face longtime friend Daniela Hantuchova in the third round, and a win there could set up a fourth-round match against French Open champion Li Na, a rematch of the 2011 Australian final.

Third-seeded Victoria Azarenka advanced in a night match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Australian wild card Casey Dellacqua. Former top-ranked player Jelena Jankovic stayed alive in the draw after beating Chang Kai-chen 6-4, 6-2 and could be a fourth-round rival for Wozniacki.

On the men's side, No. 2 Rafael Nadal advanced without much trouble from his injured right knee or from German veteran Tommy Haas in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win. Four-time champion Roger Federer didn't even need to pick up a racket because Andreas Beck withdrew from their second-round match.

The top-ranked American man bowed out when No. 8 Mardy Fish lost to Alejandro Falla of Colombia 7-6 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (6). But No. 16 John Isner survived a five-setter to beat former Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian, who was enraged by an umpire who didn't allow him to challenge a disputed line call because he took too long to ask for a review.

No. 7 Tomas Berdych, 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro and No. 18 Feliciano Lopez all advanced.

Andy Roddick was scheduled to play the last match Thursday against Lleyton Hewitt in a battle between two former No. 1-ranked players. Defending champion Novak Djokovic has an earlier center court match against Santiago Giraldo. Andy Murray, who has lost the last two Australian Open finals, takes on Edourd Roger-Vasselin.

New Mexico Is Stretching, GPS Reveals

The key thing is that this level of accuracy is not achieved in realtime.

The receivers would be recording more than the information contained in the GPS messages, they would be recording phase and signal strength data for all the satellites in the visible constellation.

Sophisticated post processing software would combine this information across multiple receivers, along with published satellite ephemeris data, to produce an accurate position solution.

Realtime positions cannot be that accurate due to affects like ionospheric refraction etc.

I used to work with a mobile system that recorded the GPS data along with inertial information (at 200Hz) that in realtime gave a solution that was usually accurate to within 30cm, and got to better than 10cm when combined with static ground station data in the post-processing step.

There are systems used in agriculture that are very accurate (10cm-ish) that use differential-GPS in realtime. The trick is your mobile unit has to be in constant communication with the differential ground station. Works ok for tractors, not so well for an aircraft 200-300km away. For differential-GPS to work well both units need to see the same satellites.

Giants give slimmer Sandoval three-year extension (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The San Francisco Giants rewarded resurgent third baseman Pablo Sandoval with a three-year contract extension Tuesday.

After a season in which Sandoval redefined his game by losing 40 pounds and enjoying an All Star year, the Giants have given him a deal worth $17.15 million.

"We all recognize that his conditioning program in the off-season and in season is a big part of (his) success," Giants vice president of baseball operations Bobby Evans told the team's website (sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com).

"We feel like Pablo has the desire and commitment to be productive and elevate his game. He's a big part of our present and our future."

The 25-year-old switch-hitting Sandoval batted .315 with 23 home runs last season despite missing 40 early-season games with injury.

In his first full season in 2009, Sandoval impressed observers by hitting .330 with 25 home runs and 90 RBIs.

But he slumped in 2010 before embarking on a fitness regime which resulted in a strong bounce back year.
