After spending half a year in Asia, 27 members of the South Dakota Air National Guard came home this week.

The transition from deployment to life at home can be a big adjustment and one family shares their journey with KDLT.

Jerime Olson was reunited with his loved ones on Wednesday, a family that described themselves as close, fun, goofy and full of laughter.

"Oh, my gosh he's home," said Grace.

Grace Olson, just eight-years-old, she was apart from her father, Jerime, for six months while he took on his third deployment in Asia.

Looking back two days ago, she remembers his arrival back home, coming down the escalator.

"I was like Daddy, Daddy," said Grace.

It was an emotional reunion; full of hugs and kisses, for Jerime, Chantel and Grace.

For Chantel, she said she?s thankful to have her husband back for more reasons than one.

"There were so many moments that I just wondered how I was going to do it? and I think I said a million times, you got this, you can do this," said Chantel.

Post-it notes, hung up in their bedroom, served as motivation, some said, ?Yes, you did it,? and another said, ?Yes, I killed the bat,? in the house.

Even Jerime remembered the frantic call he got during that episode at home.

"My wife did so many things when I was gone, she called me one time and said there's a bat in the house and I said oh, my gosh hunny, what are we going to do and she goes hunny, I have this," said Jerime.

A strong woman who held the family together during his absence and while he was away fighting for freedom, he knows his wife's role is just as important.

"Everyone focuses on the troops that are coming home, everyone says that we're heroes, but you know, the whole family is a hero," said Jerime.

For his wife Chantel, she said having Grace, helped her stay strong.

"People would say is it hard to have a child during deployment. It was the best thing for me, she was a little piece of him, I always had her, she's just like him," said Chantel.

As for Grace, she said there's a lot more fun and laughs in the house now that her Dad is back.

"He's making funny faces a lot like this," said Grace.

One thing Jerime said he's thankful for during his deployment overseas is having WiFi, he was able to face time his wife and daughter everyday for 10 minutes.

While overseas Jerime was a squad leader, back here at home, he works as a mortgage lender.

Unique spinal nerve cell activity: Novel forms of activity linked to development of motor behaviors such as swimming

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? Scientists from the University of Leicester have hit upon unique forms of spinal nerve activity that shape output of nerve cell networks controlling motor behaviours.

The breakthrough in the Department of Biology at the University of Leicester was announced Nov 8 in the journal Current Biology.

Although the neural basis of motor control has been studied for over a century, the processes controlling maturation of locomotor behaviours -- like walking and swimming -- are not fully understood.

The University of Leicester research into nerve cells responsible for motor behaviours was carried out on fish. The team aimed to understand how spinal networks produce rhythmic activity from a very immature stage -- and how such activity changes during maturation.

The team used zebrafish, a freshwater fish native to northern India and Bangladesh, because their motor networks are similar to humans. However, as they are fertilized outside the mother and their embryos are transparent, scientists can readily monitor motor network development from its onset -- something that is very difficult to do in mammals.

Lecturer in Neurobiology, Dr Jonathan McDearmid, who led the research, said: "What's unique about our work is the observation that a group of spinal nerve cells generate unusual forms of electrical activity that adapt to meet the changing requirements of the developing motor network. Whilst these cells had been previously identified, their excitable properties had not been studied in detail. We found that these cells produce age-specific activity patterns: in early life they have "autorhythmic" properties that are likely to drive embryonic movements. However, as fish develop towards more mature swimming stages, they switch firing activity to generate sustained impulses that appear to be necessary for maintenance of swimming.

"Our work is important because it sheds light on the mechanisms by which spinal nerve cells shape activity in the maturing of motor network. This is basic research that allows us to better understand how vertebrate motor activity emerges. However, in the long term, understanding of this process might help determine what goes wrong in diseases that affect spinal cord function."

Dr McDearmid said the identification of the activity generated by this group of cells -termed IC cells- happened as quite a surprise: "It was two days after Christmas when we first observed IC cells generating these unusual patterns of activity. I was conducting a few routine experiments for a related study we were running in parallel. Whilst monitoring electrical responses in different nerve cells I hit on a cell that did some very unusual things. It was a very exciting finding indeed. The only problem was that subsequent attempts to find this "magic cell" didn't prove straightforward. Because these cells change location as the fish develops, it initially proved challenging to track them down for further study. Still, in time we figured out where these cells were and that very first recording turned out to be one of the best Christmas presents we've ever had."

Researchers say they have a long way yet to go in the study -- and many questions remain unanswered. Dr McDearmid said: "We have many questions that we want to ask next. Are there other cells in the developing spine that display similar types of activity? Also, we currently have no idea how IC cells function at more mature stages, such as in adult fish. Our next aim is to determine whether IC cells retain their unusual firing characteristics at older stages."

Dr McDearmid worked with Dr Huaxia Tong, a postdoc who co-authored the study. The three- year study was funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

Iran's Ahmadinejad ridicules expense of US vote

BALI, Indonesia (AP) ? Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ridiculed the expense of the U.S. election, mocking it as a "battleground for capitalists" while speaking at a democracy forum.

Ahmadinejad's own government has been criticized for human rights abuses and sanctioned for pursuing a nuclear program many suspect is aimed at obtaining weapons. A day after Americans re-elected President Barack Obama, the Iranian president told the forum in Indonesia that democracy has become a system where the minority rules over the majority.

"Just take a look at the situation in Europe and the U.S.," Ahmadinejad said as the forum opened Thursday on the resort island of Bali. An "election, which is one of the manifestations of the people's will, has become a battleground for the capitalists and an excuse for hasty spending."

Spending on the 2012 U.S. presidential campaign was the highest ever, soaring beyond $2 billion as independent fundraising groups financed advertising to promote their favored candidates.

Ahmadinejad's criticism contrasted with other gathered leaders' calls for more democracy and freedoms for citizens around the world.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said mutual respect and diversity are the foundations of democracy.

"We need to encourage greater respect for different values, faiths and religious beliefs," Yudhoyono said. "We should not allow irresponsible acts such as the defamation of religion to divide us."

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak praised Indonesia as a Muslim nation with a thriving democracy and added that Myanmar's positive political reforms were encouraging. But he said more work needed to be done elsewhere.

"Unfortunately, we also saw how a 15-year-old Pakistani girl was shot as she promoted women's rights in her country," he said.

"Likewise, since 2003, the North Korean people can see but cannot speak, they have legs but cannot move. Human rights cannot be compromised there," he added.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Afghan President Hamid Karzai are among other leaders at the fifth Bali Democracy Forum.

Dinna Wisnu, an international political analyst from Indonesia's Paramadina Graduate School of Diplomacy, said Ahmadinejad is likely attending the event to try to find a place to fit in. And even if some Asian countries are not welcoming, the region as a whole is typically more accepting.

"Iran comes with its special agenda that has been planned as the country does not have a lot of friends in the Middle East," she said. "They are in a difficult position. If they are not trying to make friends in other regions, Iran will be alone."

Ahmadinejad also called for U.S. military bases to be dismantled worldwide and said the winner of the U.S. election made no difference to him.

"Coming or going, winning or losing is not important," he told reporters. "The important thing is the policy and behavior. And this behavior must be changed."

Iran has repeatedly said its uranium enrichment program is meant only for peaceful purposes, but the U.S. and European Union have hit Iran hard with economic sanctions out of concerns otherwise.

"The IAEA has inspected our nuclear facilities and 10 officials have reported that there is no indication that (the) Iran nuclear program has directed to non-peaceful purposes," Ahmadinejad said.

Iran has long been criticized for its human rights record, including the continued use of stoning as a method of capital punishment. Increased Internet crackdowns and the jailing of political prisoners and journalists were recently highlighted in a U.N. rights report.

The country erupted into violence three years ago when pro-democracy protesters took to the streets to oppose the election of Ahmadinejad, calling it bogus and rigged.
