(AP) ? The coroner who oversaw the inquest into the death of singer Amy Winehouse has resigned after her qualifications were questioned, her boss said Wednesday ? raising the possibility the investigation may have to be held again.

Winehouse's relatives said they were still absorbing the implications of the news and were seeking legal advice.

In October, Suzanne Greenaway ruled that the soul singer, who was found dead at her London home in July, had died from accidental alcohol poisoning.

Greenaway had been appointed an assistant deputy coroner in London in 2009 by her husband, Andrew Reid, the coroner for inner north London. But she resigned in November after authorities learned she had not been a registered U.K. lawyer for five years as required by the rules. She had practiced law for a decade in her native Australia.

Her resignation was not made public until Wednesday.

"I believed at the time that her experience as a solicitor and barrister in Australia satisfied the requirements of the post," Reid said in a statement Wednesday. "In November of last year it became apparent that I had made an error in the appointment process and I accepted her resignation."

Reid apparently broke no laws in appointing his wife but could have breached professional guidelines. Greenaway was one of several deputy assistant coroners.

The local authority, Camden Council, said it was confident Reid "had made an error in good faith" when he appointed his wife, but said the matter was being investigated by Britain's Office for Judicial Complaints.

Greenaway oversaw 12 inquests in Camden, the north London borough where Winehouse lived, and others in east London. Reid said he was "confident that all of the inquests handled were done so correctly" ? but offered to hold those inquests over again if the families of the deceased wanted it.

Winehouse's family said it had not yet decided what to do. In a statement, the family said it was "taking advice on the implications of this and will decide if any further discussion with the authorities is needed."

Winehouse's inquest could be declared invalid if her family challenges the verdict in court. But on Wednesday, her father, Mitch, appeared to downplay the likelihood, tweeting: "Don't worry about coroner nonsense. We are all OK."

A security guard found Winehouse dead in bed on July 23 at her home in Camden. The 27-year-old singer, known for her distinctive beehive hairdos and multiple Grammy-winning album "Back to Black," had battled drug and alcohol addiction for years.

At the October inquest, Greenaway delivered a verdict of "death by misadventure," saying the singer suffered accidental alcohol poisoning when she resumed drinking after weeks of abstinence.

The inquest heard evidence from a pathologist, Winehouse's doctor, the security guard who found her and a detective who described seeing three empty vodka bottles in her bedroom. It appears unlikely that a second inquest would produce a different conclusion about how she died.

"Back to Black" brought Winehouse global fame and its updated take on old-time soul, jazz, rock and doo-wop earned five Grammy Awards.

Although the singer was adored by fans worldwide for her unique voice and style, praise for her singing was often eclipsed by lurid headlines about her destructive relationships and erratic behavior. Winehouse herself turned to her tumultuous life and personal demons for material, resulting in hit songs such as "Rehab" and "Love Is a Losing Game."

As al-Qaida fades, new challenges confront US security

At Tuesday's Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, National Director of Intelligence James Clapper said Iran may be more willing to attack the U.S. at home and abroad. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

By M. Alex Johnson, msnbc.com

Al-Qaida remains a threat, but intense U.S.-led pressure is working and could relegate it and similar organizations to having only "symbolic importance," the nation's intelligence chief said Tuesday.

When and if that happens, the U.S. will no longer have the luxury of focusing on one dominant threat, James R. Clapper, the director of national intelligence, told senators in the intelligence community's annual assessment of threats to national security.

Rather, the "multiplicity and interconnectedness of potential threats, and the actors behind them, "will combine into an amorphous but critical challenge," Clapper said in testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee. He was joined at the hearing by CIA Director David Petraeus.?

While people find it easier to identify a single target ? like the Soviet Union during the Cold War or al-Qaida during President George W. Bush's war on terrorism ? "it is virtually impossible to rank, in terms of long-term importance, the numerous potential threats to U.S. national security," he said.

Clapper warned that security challenges today cut across political, economic, military and transnational trends. They reflect a "quickly changing international environment" that includes new political and military developments, the rise of "nonstate actors" ? like regional terror and paramilitary groups ? and ever-increasing access by individuals to deadly technologies. ?

The good news, he said, is that the resistance to al-Qaida over the past decade has established that sustained pressure works.

"The intelligence community sees the next two or three years as a critical transition phase for the terrorist threat, particularly for al-Qaida and like-minded groups," he said. "... As long as we sustain the pressure on it, we judge that core al-Qaida will be of largely symbolic importance to the global jihadist movement."

Take our Facebook poll: Is the U.S. safer today?

Clapper, a retired Air Force general and former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, was confirmed as national intelligence director in August 2010.?

In his testimony Tuesday, Clapper and Petraeus talked in detail about al-Qaida and other threats to national security:

  • Al-Qaida: The death of Osama bin Laden deprived radical Islam of it "most iconic and inspirational leader" at a time when its capabilities had already been degraded by years of U.S.-led pressure, Clapper said.?Al-Qaida's new leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, is unlikely to change the organization's strategic direction, even though "most al-Qaida members find Zawahiri's leadership style less compelling than bin Laden's image as a holy man and warrior" and "will not offer him the deference they gave bin Laden."?

As a result, "al-Qaida increasingly will seek to execute smaller, simpler plots to demonstrate relevance to the global jihad," Clapper said. In fact, smaller regional groups like al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula and al-Qaida in Iraq are likely to "surpass the remnants of core al-Qaida in Pakistan" as threats to U.S. interests.?

  • Syria: It's only a matter of time before Syrian President Bashar Assad falls from power, Clapper said, but it could be a long time because of intervention by Iran and the militant Islamist group Hezbollah and military supplies from North Korea. That makes it difficult for the West to plan for "a post-Assad situation," he said.
  • Weapons of mass destruction: The spread of biological, chemical and ?nuclear weapons is "among our top concerns," Clapper said, because "the time when only a few states had access to the most dangerous technologies is past."

Biological and chemical materials "move easily in our globalized economy, as do the personnel with scientific expertise to design and use them," he said.?

Open Channel: Israeli Embassy, US tourists among likely targets of bomb plot

While no recognized countries are yet known to have provided direct WMD assistance to terrorist groups, that could change: "As governments become unstable and transform, WMD-related materials may become vulnerable to nonstate actors, if the security that protects them erodes," he said.

  • Iran: Petraeus said he believed the International Atomic Energy Agency's report in November ? which said Iran is on the verge of a nuclear "breakthrough" that could allow it to launch a missile able to hit Israel and Europe ? is accurate. ?

But Iran's willingness to allow IAEA inspectors to extend their stay in Tehran this week indicates that new sanctions on Iran's central bank are beginning to bite. (NBC News has reported that China, Iran's biggest oil customer, has recently reduced its purchases of Iranian oil after behind-the-scenes negotiations with U.S.)

Msnbc.com: Will Iran make good on its threat against US?

  • North Korea: The death of supreme leader Kim Jong-il is unlikely to lead to any fundamental change in Pyongyang's isolation and belligerence, Petraeus said. There's no reason to believe, he warned that the new leader, Kim Jong-un, will stop the country's exports of ballistic missiles and other materials to Iran, Syria and possibly other countries.
  • Cyber-threats: Advances in information technology have opened the door to mass-scale collection of personal and governmental data by China, Russia and numerous independent groups, Clapper said.

Unfortunately, "innovation in functionality is outpacing innovation in security, and neither the public nor private sector has been successful at fully implementing existing best practices," he said. That's shown by well-publicized intrusions into the NASDAQ computer system and International Monetary Fund networks, underscoring the "vulnerability" of the U.S. economy.

  • Health threats and natural disasters: Clapper pointed to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan as an example of what could go wrong even when a government acts appropriately. ?

"Although Tokyo responded adequately in the immediate aftermath of Japan's largest earthquake, the triple disaster contributed to Prime Minister (Naoto) Kan's resignation," he said. Beyond the immediate health and safety concerns, such developments open the way for militant groups to "challenge and potentially destabilize governments" that never would have been considered vulnerable, he said.

"Although we can say with near certainty that new outbreaks of disease and catastrophic natural disasters will occur during the next several years, we cannot predict their timing, locations, causes or severity," he warned.

Andrea Mitchell and Courtney Kube of NBC News contributed to this report from Washington.

Bulletins Live ? JD Power and LMC Automotive Report: January ...

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., Jan. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ ?
New-vehicle retail sales performance in January is abating fears of any reversal from the strong close to 2011, according to a monthly sales forecast developed by J.D. Power and Associates Power Information Network? (PIN) and LMC Automotive.

Retail Light-Vehicle Sales

January new-vehicle retail sales are projected to come in at 681,000 units, an increase of 6 percent from January 2011. This represents a seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) of 10.9 million units, which is lower than the selling rate in December 2011 but well above January 2011. Retail transactions are the most accurate measurement of true underlying consumer demand for new vehicles.

?Retail light-vehicle sales in January are showing stability coming off the 2011 high note in December,? said John Humphrey, senior vice president of global automotive operations at J.D. Power and Associates. ?Vehicles are currently remaining on dealer lots for fewer than 50 days on average, which is the lowest level for January for the past several years. This is a good indication that pent-up demand is beginning to return to the market.?

Total Light-Vehicle Sales

Total light-vehicle sales in January are expected to come in at 869,600 units, which is 6 percent higher than in January 2011. Fleet sales are expected to increase by 9 percent compared with January 2011, accounting for 22 percent of total sales.

J.D. Power and LMC Automotive U.S. Sales and SAAR Comparisons
January 2012(1) December 2011 January 2011
New-vehicle retail 681,000 units 1,040,035 units 644,695 units
sales (6% higher than January 2011)
Total vehicle sales 869,600 units 1,240,263 units 817,621 units
(6% higher than January 2011)
Retail SAAR 10.9 million units 11.3 million units 10.3 million units
Total SAAR 13.5 million units 13.5 million units 12.7 million units
(1)Figures cited for January 2012 are forecasted based on the first 16 selling days of the month.

Sales Outlook

January sales are sustaining the momentum gained in December 2011. The traction gained in 2011, which ended on a high note for both retail and total light-vehicle sales, is carrying over into 2012 and building a foundation for strong sales this year.

LMC Automotive is maintaining its forecast for 2012 at 13.8 million units for total light-vehicle sales and 11.3 million units for retail light-vehicle sales.

"The upward movement of auto sales during the second half of 2011 and the stabilization of that trend in January casts a favorable light on 2012, despite the macro-level risks the industry continues to face," said Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting at LMC Automotive. "Coming off the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, a renewed sense of optimism is returning to the industry, as the focus continues to shift from survival to planning for the future."

North American Production

North American light-vehicle production ended nearly 10 percent higher in 2011, compared with 2010, according to LMC Automotive. Volume came in at 13.0 million units, an increase of 1.2 million units from 2010. The Detroit 3 OEMs outperformed the total industry in 2011, with a 15 percent increase in production from 2010. European OEMs also saw significant production increases (up more than 34 percent), supported by increased localization. Production by Japanese OEMs was down more than 5 percent from 2010 due to supply chain challenges resulting from the Japanese earthquake/tsunami and Thailand flooding disasters. Hyundai's North American production increased by 44 percent, as they also increased their manufacturing operations in North America.

Vehicle inventory declined slightly to a 52-day supply at the beginning of January (compared with a 61-day supply at the beginning of December), due to strong December 2011 sales and the holiday production shutdown last month. Car inventory was at a 55-day supply in January, down from 59 days in December, while truck inventory levels fell to a 50-day supply (previously at 63 days).

"As industry-level inventory has returned to a healthy level, the need for a disciplined balance and management of supply and demand will continue to return as well," said Schuster.

LMC Automotive's 2012 North American production forecast is at 13.8 million units, an increase of six percent from 2011.
