?Fact & Fiction?, an international symposium, continues through Wednesday at the auditorium of the new National Wildlife Refuges Gateway Visitor Center on Roanoke Island.
The symposium and all related events are free and open to the public and are part of the 75th Anniversary celebration of The Lost Colony outdoor drama.
The program has been designed as a gathering?of scholars from around the world to discuss from their own unique perspectives the remarkable emergence of new research that is stimulating excitement and discussion about Sir Walter Ralegh?s?explorations and settlements on the Carolina coast in the 1580s as well as the story, in fact and fiction, of ?The Lost Colony.?
A total of 20 presenters ? 10 from the fields of arts, culture and government and 10 history and science scholars ? will explore the historical facts, new discoveries that may change the story of the first attempt at colonization in the New World and how the arts interpret history in many different forms.
All presentations will be filmed for later showing on local government access Channel 20 and so that DVD?s may be made available for classroom use and for research.
The Town of Manteo is funding this portion through its Channel 20 grant program.
And while the symposium is in session, across U.S. 64 at Fort Raleigh Historical Site, archaeologists will be digging at various sites in an effort to find more evidence of early colonists at that location.
There will be free public tours and an exhibit of earlier finds in the Fort Raleigh Museum.
Also scheduled are performances of Shepherd of the Ocean, Bloody Mary and the Virgin Queen, a re-enactment of the 1939 CBS radio broadcast of Paul Green?s The Lost Colony, and the music of Patsy Cline.
There also will be an evening performance of music from The Lost Colony performed by area high school orchestras and bands. The entertainment offerings illustrate how history can be interpreted through the arts.
The Dare County Arts Council will host an exhibit of work of WPA artists who came to the area in the 1930?s to help kick off what would be the longest running outdoor drama in the U.S. ? The Lost Colony.
Roanoke Conundrum?Fact & Fiction?is sponsored by the Roanoke Island Historical Association and the National Park Service at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site in association with the US Fish & Wildlife Visitor Center, the First Colony Foundation, and Elizabeth R & Company, with assistance from the Dare County Arts Council, Dare County Schools, Town of Manteo and the Thomas Harriot College of Arts & Sciences, East Carolina University.
